If Tokyo Plastic doesn't win I'll eat my pants.
That is quite an impressive list. Any of those could win.
I personally think FI will take it, but I am in full agreement asun2art.
I agree, which is why I didn't want to have the responsibility for picking one!Quote:

seriously, i can't se why it's so cool. the concept behind it is very classic and, i dare to say, newbish: loads of animations and loading for just 10-50k's of useful information
Indeed. Tokyoplastic should have been nominated for the 2003 soty award.
Too bad the TALL buildings site didn't make it to the list. :(
the tall buildings site was great. who made it sense?
Soleil Noir ! Top
While I'd love to win...I doubt that'll happen :p
Of the rest, my fave is Soleil Noir.
Some people just don't know how to have fun!Quote:

I guess my thing with Tokyo Plastic is that they did one aspect of a great site really well, and it is a lot of fun, but I think the site of the year should be one that does all elements of a site well, that really stands up to all aspects web design.
it would have done if you'd nominated it when you nominated the vodafone site.Quote:
Makes sense.Quote:

I said this in another thread, before FI's new sites, I would have gone for TokyoPlastic ... but what FI has done is solved a lot of problems that non-flash people bring up all the time:
1. you can't use the back button
2. you can't bookmark
3. you can't print the pages
4. it's a niche
5. no dynamic content
They've solved all of that between their home site and, of course, road runner.
They get my nod just for making such huge leaps in useability for Flash.
the FI site utilises solutions to all of these features which have been in existence for, in some cases, years (check out the teknision.com site). It's a revolutionary site in terms of design but not in terms of usability/accessibility functions.Quote:

Those things have all been done before, it's just that your average flash designer ignores them and considers them unimportant. FI is smart enough to realise usability's importance and to know that where possible they should utilise the hacks that are out there to make flash more usable, even if they don't work in every browser.
I have no idea what you mean "no dynamic content" and "it's a niche".
that's intriguing me too.Quote:

To which I would say that flash certainly has its uses, even for some all-flash sites, usually with presentational content, but I'd still say that it's not suitable for most types of web site's requirements. But whatever.
And dynamic content has been the norm in flash for a couple of years now I thought.
If you haven't voted yet get it in there, the poll will close tomorrow afternoon.

Come on, it takes 2 fricken seconds. Its not like you have to stand in line for hours to cast a vote for one of two monkeys:D
Thanks all who voted, FI is FK's site of 2004.
Cheers
Im glad to hear this, they deserve the recognition.
Dare I say that 2A has been de-throned as the most talked about??

How does one pronounce "wellvetted?"
Is it all separated like "Well Vetted" or does it sound more like "velvetted?" (you know, like covered in velvet).
Looks like I'll need some ketchup.
If I hadn't of voted Tokyoplastic it would of been FI.
I don't know what the big deal eith Soleil Noir is.
only 4 votes for RR? jeez :) thanks anyway.
Who cares, the FI site ****in owns:DQuote:

RR was tight last year, its like the academy awards, no one remembers all the good movies from that first week of January.
Well, like I said earlier, the RR.com site was more 2003 than 2004. Plus, I think it takes a little digging to find out how innovative that site is.
For those who don't know:
- Using xml feeds in flash isn't easy
- Using a google search in flash is damn near impossible
- Getting those dynamic feeds for video takes a lot of work (still not sure how that's done since the videos aren't .flv files and use RealPlayer)
- There's a great deal of sharedObject actionscripting going on
- The design is very fresh
- There are loads of content there
- Just getting the feeds they get from AP, CNN etc. etc. for VIDEO, and then being able to impliment it, is simply astounding
So yes, rr.com is amazing ... but it came out in 2003 :)
Don't be upset, I still voted for fantasy-interactive.com ... mainly because it does something else amazing, makes flash pages that are functional like html pages (ie. bookmarking, back button, no need for "loading" bars etc.)
Well, the guy I work with is a php junkie and hates anything flash ... or any animation or "slick" stuff period.Quote:

He's said to me time and time again that it's a "niche".
As far as it being suitable for most type of web site requirements, I don't see it. The only thing it doesn't do that I wish it did was allow for uploading of documents (I'm sure there's a hack for it, but I digress).
It doesn't cover ALL web functions, and in some cases it's better to use other options to make certain website functions. But for displaying content, displaying video (in page), allowing for more visually engaging motion, animation, music, and so on and so forth, it does it better than anything else.
The dynamic content thing is about the fact that most flash sites don't use it. So, people think it can't.
Again, hybrid sites are where it should be at. If I can make a more stimulating front end in flash than with html/php/asp then I'll go for it. If I want to make an admin form, create doc trees etc., I'll use php.
