british people tend to drink tea with milk because we prefer the stronger black teas from india, sri lanka, etc. (tetley, brooke bond etc)
a little known fact is that the milk bonds with the esters in tea and "sticks" to the tongue thus giving more flavour.
of course, green tea's should be taken without milk as the taste is far more delicate.
and contrary to common belief, milk should be added afterwards.
the practice of putting milk in first was to stop cheap china cups from cracking, and invariably scalds the milk.
