Firefox users...give me your wisdom

Hey peeps ~
So I just upgraded to Firefox 1.5 and between Firefox itself incorporating many features that used to only be available through the use of extensions and the usual joy of getting all your extensions working again with a new build, I have lost a very important feature...the ability to open a link in a new tab by holding down the Ctrl button.

I am fairly certain that this behavior was made available to me through the use of an extension in previous builds, but I can't remember which one it was. I can't find the setting in Firefox's options, nor in any of my currently installed extensions, though I am pretty sure I have all the same extensions installed now as I did with previous builds.

If anyone could point me in the direction of the proper extension or setting I would appreciate it. :)

RIP doesn't work in the latest firefox... :( Boooooooo... Stick with 1.0.7 for now, if you use RIP...

Could it have been disabled by some extension instead? I'm using 1.5 on my PC and ctrl-click opens a link in a new tab. I don't have any extensions installed. If you're on a Mac, it's command-click, not ctrl-click.

That is interesting...I didn't even discover RIP until I got 1.5 and I am currently using it with 1.5.

I've attached an image showing the tab options as they are currently set and still no joy. To get the desired behavior I have to right-click and choose to open the link in a new tab from there. The way the option highlighted in red is worded you would think every link I left-clicked normally would open in a new tab, but it doesn't.

Little chance of that happening, I think. I actually tried to roll back to my previous version when I saw how many of my essential extensions hadn't yet been updated. Things got ugly enough that I ended up sticking with 1.5. I have since found the Local Install extension that will make all your extensions compatible with 1.5, but it does so by simply bypassing the version checking mechanism. So most everything works, but it may indeed be some small conflict with one of these extensions that haven't been officially updated yet. If that's the case then it's actually a fairly small price to pay in exchange for being able to use all of the previously disabled extensions, but I do miss my Ctrl-click.

Nice Firefox skin, btw. If Aquatint weren't quite as slick as it is I'd be using yours. I'm not a big fan of the diagonal lines on the progress bar, but that's a minor thing. Overall, quite a cool design. Nice job. :)

Haha thanks :) One day I'll have the time to finish it propperly... at the minute it has a couple of bugs with showing favicons... and a couple of graphics aren't as I'd like them... one day... one day... :)

Try this one: type in your address bar "about:config". Without quotes of course.
You will see lots of settings for FF. Now type in the filter bar "loadi"
You will hopefully see "browser.tabs.loadInBackground ..... false"
If the value is set to false, change it to true by doubleckicking on it.
Maybe you have to restart your browser.

Yup... 1.5.0.1 is the latest browser... RIP doesn't work with it :)

So Mark, a couple of questions...First, if it's really that bleeding edge then I'm not all that eager to update Firefox yet again. I've got this thing tweaked from here to hades and back and I hate taking a chance on having to go back through and put everything back just how I like it if something goes horribly wrong and I have to delete my profile. That being said, I did notice that the newest version addresses eight security issues, with at least one of them leading to possible remote execution of code. So okay, maybe I want to update. How does everything else work so far? Is RIP the only thing that doesn't appear to work?

And question number two...Have you tried MR Tech Local Install? This will allow you to bypass the version checking on one or more extensions just in case the only thing non-compliant about it is the version number. I ask because I've got version 1.0.6 of RIP working now in Firefox v1.5.

Its only a minor update to fix some security bugs I think... Its a .0.1 upgrade, so nothing major, it just disables RIP for some reason...

I only had Tab Mix Plus and RIP installed, so I can't comment on anything else not working.

I haven't tried the Mr Tech script thing... looks a little dodgy for me, I can wait a week till RIP updates :)

Firefox 1.5 is ready to rock and is ready to roll baby.

I wouldn't recommend actually uninstalling IE. Not only is it very hard to get it off a PC, there are still some pages that just don't work right in Firefox. It's handy to have it around just in case you need it. Microsoft has woven a multitude of program dependencies throughout the operating system that make it sometimes problematic to remove IE completely.

It also might be that I just haven't found it despite a fairly exhaustive search, but with Firefox there is no way to pull a single file out of your cache. If I come across something I want to save, in some cases there is no way for me to do it with Firefox. I have to paste the link into IE then browse to my temp internet files and pull it out of there.

But yeah, after you've surfed with the Fox, there's no going back. :D

You can... you navigate to the correct folder, rename every file in there *.jpg etc... then you can save the files :D

firefox is making flash run really slow, i checked out my own web site and it runs like a grandma without any legs.

More googling awaits me as i figure this problem out. Lovin these tabs at the moment, and some of the extensions are cool.

Not sure what might be going on with Flash. I haven't noticed any kind of slowdown when playing Flash movies, myself. I checked your site with Firefox, but it's kind of hard to say if it's playing slow or not without knowing how fast it's supposed to be running. It did perhaps seem a bit sluggish, but if that's the case then I'm tempted to think it's your site and not Firefox. I tried it in IE too, and it actually didn't even display correctly for me in there...parts of the movie missing, menu elements gone, etc. So you might want to look into the possibility that there is something in your code that's not quite kosher.

Since you are just getting started with Firefox, I thought I would throw out a couple of suggestions. Here are some of my favorite/recommended extensions. There are plenty more that might be useful to you, but I would definitely make sure you at least check these out. Keep in mind that they just released a new build for Firefox so you're going to have to go through the version-checking dance for all the extensions until they've had a chance to get up to speed. Firefox has also incorporated many of the features that used to only be available through extensions, so you'll want to make sure you actually need an extension before installing it. Have fun. :)

I've been going through all my web sites i've made and everythings screwed up. All my CSS paddings margins and all that jazz are completly screwed when viewing them in firefox. HTML sucks, whoever designed it can go eat 300 cheese burgers and die of a heart attack.

Aaaaarrrghhh.

And i know that if i fix them for firefox, its gonna screw up in internet explorer.

if you have a clickable scroll button on your mouse, you can open links in a new tab by clicking them with your middle mouse button, and close them in the same way.
I find this one handy ctrl and th "+" key zoom in on text, ctrl and "-" zoom out.

Actually that's not Firefox or IE (well IE sucks but...) but pure written HTML ;)

Thanks Natsia, but yeah, I tried that and it doesn't work either. Both middle-clicking and left-clicking links while holding down the Ctrl key result in nothing happening.

You've tried updating and reinstalling?

Is your mouse set up properly? I bought a new mouse and the middle button was programmed for 'Next' rather than auto-scroll. Since changing it, the middle click closes tabs or opens links in a new tab.

So it was definitely an extension conflict. I upgraded to Firefox 1.5.0.1 and have not yet bypassed the version validation on any of my disabled extensions and my Ctrl-click is working again. Now I just have to figure out which one was causing the problem.
