this should stay a sticky forever
sorry Tom, but I already knew how to do all that, and I do have a team of, like 15 coderz and php'ers, I just need to know how to stop my character walking through walls.
[sorry, completely pointless post to a good stickuy, but you know it's early in the morning here and I wanna amuse myself and feel funny, so please feel free to delete this post mods out there]
chris
On first look your post may seem like nonsense fun making but yeah,it has a deeper sense on second look ;)Quote:

As the article linked here states in nice manner,a small experiement or game can and will be much more rewarding once you´ve done it than a huge game you can´t finish.
I think this is an equally valid link to have stuck here:

I'm so going to be looking at writing a Playback demo module now :)

Minions of Mirth (MoM) was made in 10 months by essentially 2 people and some contracted artwork. The MMORPG was done with Torque and numerous open source software.
So, it can be done *IF* you know what you are doing. The problem is that most people wanting to make an MMORPG have no skills or experience at all.

Not that I've tried it, but it might be something to throw at newbies when they want to create an mmorpg.
also be prepared to have no life for a long time, as programs like this take a ton of code to make!
That one hit it right on the dot! Regarding this game we're making (Nth Legion) coding started Novermber 2005... it's almost done, but still... it ain't finished!!!Quote:

And it's french :p
I know it is Fils, but nothing is perfect ;)

And ( Hmmm this going to slip into a debate isn't it ), Dofus was state sponsored. I believe ( Please feel to correct me ) that the dev team was sponsored for a year during it's development.
Not saying they were eating diamond sandwiches and drinking angels tears during that year, I imagine the guys were far from comfortable, but before everyone holds up Dofus as the ideal, and that it is possible for some indies to do something like this, well yes it is. If you've got food on the table and a year to do it in. Oh, a year to do it in, and no end client, you're just doing it for yourself.
To put it in perspective, in a year at work, with a similar sized team, we did Spooks, Jamie Kane and Death in Sakkarha[sp I can't even spell my own game, how lame is that].
Squize.
I believe too the had the money gathered up before starting the Dofus. And to say they did it in 1 year is understatement, it has been 5 years now and its not even finished. Remember, MMORPG needs quite a lot of cash and people to keep running, servers crash, people complain about lags, bugs are found etc, its not like once it gets released you simply collect the payments.Quote:

If its so popular, the next logical step for such games make front end with Flash technology, keeping server side backend in ASP/ PHP with same databse.Quote:

True but i believe on encouragement so your post stinks may be we can put it in better ways.
Make a plan by stages
estimate cost and time
Complete each stage
Have fun
Those are the things that should be done to help each other
hey... i dont get HOW my post discourages or encourages anyone, all i was doing was explaining something...
But the points you made are good aswell
Also with any big project, you not only need to plan the technical side, but also manage people. Choosing a work methodology, using project management software etc helps you keep your goals realistic and gets the job done, but people are the main part of any software and you need to keep them happy. Make sure people are having fun developing, or else they won't do it, and neither should you.
Anyone who comes here saying "I want to make a mmorpg" or anything similar has no chance whatsoever of ever making one within the next 5-10 years.
This statement is true because: A person who would come here asking for mmorpg help almost certainly has no or very little programming skills and cannot even picture the kind of programming that is needed to write a mmorpg.
Case closed.
Kinda wrong, but hey, if it's case closed I'm happy :)

Every gamer kid wants to make a MMORPG and most of them will try and fail miserably.Quote:

However, im sure i can pick up quickly, and already understand and have used successfully alot of actions. i just want to know how to send info over the web, as well as saving data. help? please. kinda lengthy, but i really want to know, im good at scripting, but bad at directions. and i already have the physics system down, hours of bugs and learning! :p
and i read what you think about people like me, ive already written a 5 page script though (i know what knid of scripting is required(meaning i know that is small compared to what lies ahead))
Welcome to FK mate.
This isn't really the best thread to post your question in, it's a very anti-mmorpg / be a bit realistic thread.
Have a look at the knowledge base sticky, there's a link to a huge multi-player thread there.
Being perfectly honest I had a couple of days playing with electro-server ages ago, and I really struggled to get my head around it. It's not for the faint of heart.
Squize.
Hmm im not sure i agree with that. What if the person who asks is an amazingly skilled programmer this way they would have the knowledge to make a MMORPG and could possibly make it.Quote:

Yep, 'cause that's going to happen :)

"whew", and here i was afraid i was going to get yelled at for being new or posting in a bad topic, etc. and its not much of an mmorpg, as it is an action game with abilities, i should probably switch to a better thread, im assuming you guys know this place like the back of your hand, where are better descriptions on certain functions? (as ive said, im bad at directions, but i use functions well).
course, i could just look
yup, already found good info!! hitTest info, i didnt know it tested the actual shape when coordinates were applied (drat, i spent all that time on making them collide too), this means ill be able to have my better collisions!! sweet, anyways, bye from this thread (this place is awesome)
My Mate made a MMORPG Game at www.robostrike.com all in flash his name is bill and chris helped i think as well but bill done most of it i think and there MMORPG game was made by 2 people so suck on that lol.
hmm, looks nice, but it's not my type of game(turn based? bleh), i guess there are others who think differantly, but other than that i think its pretty good.
it was made by 2 people in less than a year but they still have little updates
That's pretty fast (especially for me, ive got school AND im lazy). I wish I was better at making these graphics, it seems like the only hope I've got is to find pictures that look like whatever, or to make it in a 3d renderer.
however, in a few days (err, weekends) I made the starting point for my (hopefully) going-to-be-succesful game. its not much to look at, but its got jumping (shift), brakes(space) movement(arrow keys), collision and what not, and a pretty nice cursor. keep in mind im new, just starting hs, am lazy, and using flash 5...any suggestions for imroving what ive got?(besides graphics) oh, and im using a mac 9.2 without internet!! (that green thing is a wall, click on a button to change your mode of movement(car, bus, walk respectively)
dang, already found somin i should change(backwards looks funny)
I didn't play yet, but that site is pretty odd. There's some navigation going on in Dutch, but the rest of the site is in French - or at least on my computer. Are you guys by any chance from Belgium?Quote:

Yes, I know you can change the language, but the flash-based top navigation is always in Dutch on my computer, no matter what language I select. Pretty strange.
Wait what?Quote:

Also I may as well contribute my secret shame to the thread - Shenanigans 2. Some FKers might remember it from a few years ago, it was an online multiplayer RPG styled game that I spent too much time on and never ended up finishing. I learned a good lesson though - and I highly recommend not starting a project like this. If you insist on starting one though, just make sure to realize you most likely wont be finishing it.
And for anybody curious: some screenshots!
(dont mind all of the debug info and 'programmer art')
Castle Entrance
A store!
House Placement 1
House Placement 2
NPC Jamboree
Defending the household
Monsters and such
Can anyone in this thread help me by posting any kind of tutorial, advanced or simple, for a mmorpg, either way i'll figure it out.
Did you read the thread mate ?
How many mmorpg's are there in Flash ? Let's say 10. What are the odds that even one of the developers of those 10 have written a tutorial ? Writing any sort of tut is quite an undertaking, one for a mmorpg would be huge.
If you want to do one ( And ignore most of the advice in this thread ), make sure you have the ability to both:
Code an rpg
Use Flash multi-user servers, such as electrotank.
mmorpg, the new gta
Squize.
Just have the best of both worlds.Quote:
