It's 10 for Roger Federer!

Roger Federer has won his 10th grand slam title today against Fernando Gonzalez at the Australian Open without losing a set during the whole tournament!

Gonzalez is currently the second bets player on the tour if you take the results of the past four months (lost to Federer four times, three times in a final, and destroyed the world number two a few days ago). However, in all the matches Fernando has broken Federer's serve only 3 times in a total of 83 serve games! Federer leads him now 10 to 0!

As always at the end of a big tournament, Federer sets some amazing stats, just look at his current streaks: 30 sets, 14 tiebreaks, 36 matches, 6 tournaments, 11 GS semifinals, 7 GS finals, 3 grand slams. The most amazing one: 63-3 sets in the last three grand slams! 2 of those 3 in tiebreaks!

Domination, pure domination! Scary thing, he's still evolving. :p

Maybe we can figure that out. Some possible reasons:

- You're a fan of one of his opponents or an already retired player that's now losing all his records
- He makes tennis look so easy that you ask yourself why you can't play like that
- You are bored because the same guy wins alomst everything
- His perfected mental control makes you miss the emotion in the game
- You always prefer to cheer for the underdog
- He's not from your country
- Your girlfriend would leave you for him
- He has all the money you would like to have

i suppose because i'm half swiss i should be thrilled, but it just seems too easy for him. he needs better competition...the lack of which will always haunt his legacy.

Is he arrogant? I think I saw an interview with him once, and I think he seemed a bit arrogant.

He isn't. It's actually the case that most of the other top players are close friends of him. Nadal, Roddick, Safin, Blake, Gonzalez, Agassi ... they all share a private life with him or plan their trainings together. It's just the press that always asks him the same stupid questions that made him awsner many of them as a joke what does'nt always end as planned in his non nativ English language.

About Federer, the competition is there, and it's definitely not a weak competition, he's just playing at a whole new level never seen before, only two players come to mind that where similarly impressive, Laver and Borg. Have a look at his head-to-head stats against players ranked number one at some time:

8:3 vs Agassi
1:0 vs Sampras
12:1 vs Roddick
6:3 vs Ferrero
11:7 vs Hewitt
7:2 vs Safin

And all the other young players right now, all with huge talent: Nadal, Gonzalez, Djokovic, Murray, Gasquet, Robredo, Ancic, Ljubicic, Berdych or the older but not less strong guys like Blake, Davydenko, Nalbandian ... the competition is there, more than ever and many of them would beat a Federer of four/five years ago, but Federer worked hard on all his weaknesses, like the backhand or his mental side, making no tactic or specific talent against him work anymore.

The dude is awesome... regardless of where he's from. I'm loving the pace at which he's winning...

Good thing for his fans, he has no plans to retire. He actually wants to make history and at this level, that's maybe the only way someone is able to have enough motivations to really do it. He even mentioned Connors title record as one of his objectives. With the big difference that Connors made it with mostly low profile tournaments while Federer almost only plays tournaments of the two biggest categories (slam and masters). Another of his objectives are the Olympics 2012 in Wimbledon, by then he will definitely have beaten Sampras grand slam record, even if he only wins half of the slams he currently does. Well, Sampras record could be history as early as next year. Only Borg achieved them as fast as Federer, but retired with 26.

I have to admit that after seeing Gonzales in his semi 2 nights before this loss, that I thought he would be a hard man to beat and I was looking forward to a really tough 5 sets....no such luck, Roger through in 3 straight.

Both semis were spectacular, Federer the first night and Gonzales the second, and the way Gonzales has improved in the last year or so is nothing short of astonishing. to get to his match with RF, he beat Hewitt, Blake & Haas...all with apparent ease.

It's so easy for them and only the fans that really care would have read the original interview and know what he actually said.

It basicaly started after retired players like Courier, McEnroe, Agassi ... started calling Federer the best ever and those kind of questions than started coming up in almost every of Federers interviews. Now Federer isn't one that just ignores those questions, so there's always enough text to construct something out of it.

Roger Federer is the most powerful player in tennis after Pete Sampras. Right now other than Nadal nobody else can beat him especially Andy Roddick. Roddick was playing so well untill he bumped into King Federer. Kudos to the champ !

I was surprised to see the way the Black beauty Serena dessimated the Russian beauty in straight sets.

I say this because he's SO solid when it comes to tennis... i mean there is no real aspect of his game that has any big weakness (except his serve) which isnt even that bad. The thing that makes federer so good is that he can make a good shot even in a bad position.

For me he is certainly much better than Pete. He equalled Pete's record of 156 consequtive weeks being no.1 this week and will most certainly overhaul Jimmy Conners record of 160 weeks.

Federer has beaten Pete at Wimbledon well before he became number one, at a time where Pete still won most of his matches, especially in Wimbledon where he made most of his slam victories. Since than Federer has incredible improved, worked on all his weaknesses. Federer has now one slam more than Sampras at the same age, with the difference that Pete started much earlier to achieve them.

Oh and Federer may not have the fastest serve, but he has a serve that is incredible hard to read for his opponents and with a lot of spin in them. On the other hand he has a huge talent to read the opponents serve, just have a look at the head to head with Roddick. The best Sampras would have no chance to win against Federer right now. Federer would return most of Sampras serves and his groundstrokes are much better ... volleys about equal.

To be fair... he didn't play against Sampras at his apex. He got him at the end of his career basically.

But that's the risk you run when you say "the best"... I always think that the qualifier "at this time..." applies quite well.

True, but you can compare their playing styles and how it would match up. Everyone out there that plays a little bit like Sampras has a clear negative record against Federer, mostly because a good serve just does'nt mean much against Federer, same for volleys as Federer is really the master of passing shots. So I think it's pretty clear who would win.
