Getting 100% CPU Usage on the FK board... :/

Never had this problem before, but browsing the FK board (forums, in case there's any confusion) skyrockets my CPU Usage. Getting over 90% in my web browser alone at the moment, but if go to bbc.co.uk instead, it drops back down to 0% CPU Usage. This is using Safari, but if I use Gran Paradiso (latest version of Firefox) instead, I get the same results.

Could it be something to do with the latest adverts on FK? That Intel Xeon one seems to be at a pretty high framerate (and it'd be pretty crafty for processor adverts to slow down your computer, not that I'm saying it was intentional or anything).

well you could deactivate Flash media for this domain if you think that doesn´t break the rules.

Usually I dont care that much about advertisemnts but the front page of FK is just horrible on my old computer,- lots of advertisemnts with poorly tweened animations and elements that just require to much CPU- as like they were tested and concetped as a single advertisemnt from the CPU usuage. The forum with google adwords is absolutly ok but the front page not imo. (in terms of CPU usuage)

also check out "noscript" (again firefox) if your computer gets down because lots of javascipt elements on the website. It will deactivate all java script elements that aren´t triggered by yourself (lots of google syndicate and other scripts for example that you even would notice usually).

Yeah, frontpage is a nightmare for Mac users like me.

I've never seen any Google adwords on the forum - I get two Flash ads at the top of each page, one banner-sized, one a big square.

Gonna have to cut this post short because the fan noise is starting to bug me. :(

We're making some mods to the home page shortly. We'll try to get anything FK related to these issues tested before we update it.

Ads have changed now, CPU Usage is back to normal. :)

Actually, scratch that, still getting 100%. :s That 'Core 2 Duo' advert might be using the same advertising technique... ¬_¬

if you dont like firefox you can opera a shot- lets you block the content you dont want to load or display or use custom css- templates that even exclude images or tables.
I dont think that FK will and can change the ads for you

Only web browser I have qualms with is Internet Explorer (you should see the Mac version...), but I'd rather not change browser just for the sake of Flash Kit. Safari has so many time-saving minor features that I've grown accustomed to (ie, clicking on the edges of the address bar selects all of its current contents, whereas clicking on the text itself doesn't select anything, it just focuses the textfield).

I thought the redmond browser for apple died many years ago- are you even using that ancient piece? - not even redmond themselfes support their websites for it or windows IE´s older than 6.x.
Booth IE and Safari are OS browsers and by far the most limited ones available on the systems- opera,firefox,seamonkey,netscape,... are just a few others available also for the mac . It´s like usig msPaint instead of Photoshop, except that browsers are free.

Internet Explorer for Mac is 6 years old, I just keep it as a 'last, last, last resort' in case nothing else works (happened once, I think IE has a weird JavaScript parser, so it was able to display some script a friend was trying to show me).
Would still say Safari's better than the latest IE (Windows update told me to get the new IE on my PC. This disabled my PC's internet connection without telling me, and none of the programs could connect until we disabled IE's - on by default - 'Work Offline' setting). Would only call it limited if there was something I needed it to do that it couldn't.
I've always been one for trying new browsers. Was on Firefox for about a month or two, but it didn't have any features I needed, took ages to open, and didn't have the simple address bar selection that Safari has. Also tells me every time I open it that I didn't end my last browsing session correctly, and I should restore it. Always respected Opera for its innovations, but I've never really enjoyed using it. Never thought of Netscape as having the edge over any browsers.
Plus, the key thing here is that Safari, unlike most OS X web browsers, has OpenGL rendering for the Flash Player.

But yeah, I like Safari. With the exception of not having any way to get rid of these laggy ads (which admittedly Flash Kit needs to pay the bills), it does everything I need it to. Although on Windows I would always use and recommend Firefox (only ever browsing experience with IE 7 was horrible).

Actually, IE's JS engine is faster and smoother than Gecko's or Opera's.

Interesting results, render. Shall start recommending Opera on Windows instead of Firefox. :) I'll start downloading the new Opera after I finish this post.

No holy war needed, I've always been open to (with the exception of IE, which I hate on principle more than anything else) different browsers.

Getting mixed impressions of Opera 9.10.

CPU Usage is definitely down, although it skyrockets whenever I open a new page. Changing the size of the window is the fastest I've ever seen it in any browser. The widgets look a lot better than Firefox extensions.

UI is absolutely horrible (actually, looks a lot nicer now that I've switched it to its official skin instead of the OS X native one - at the cost of a fair bit of speed), but it's a cross-platform app, so it's not meant to adhere to OS X guidelines. Don't like having my tabs above the address bar, don't like having a 'new tab' button, don't like the tabs bar appearing if you only have one open.
Page rendering is slow, and a lot of the time it doesn't finish. I end up seeing pictures which it hasn't bothered resizing to the right dimensions.
Also don't like how when I click the address bar, it automatically selects the whole address for me, even if I just want to highlight the last word of it to go to a different file in the folder. Have to click it once, then click again when I want to do my selections. And I hate hate hate the random buttons that appear when the address bar's selected...

Sorry, but Opera's just not for me. Too deeply attached to Safari. Would use it on Windows any day, though.

well at least you gave it a shot ;), I like it because I hardly know any other software piece that is so full of incredible shortcuts except maybe PS (and I love shortcuts)- that´s propably the main reason for me besides the biggest functionality already onboard.

Actually, I think the main thing that worried me about Opera was that I was getting low framerates in Flash... it might be one of those Mac browsers that doesn't have OpenGL support in the Flash Player (I haven't seen a list anywhere, I'm not sure if anyone actually knows :s).

not a mac user but opera is certainly windows optimized (several people say that) - just like firefox is linux optimized (I know that even from expierence). And my guess is that safari is simply mac optimized- most mac users I know here on the campus prefer safari because of it´s fast raection times and better intergrated application design (gui, usuability,...), so safari might be a better choise for most people on the mac

Oh, never knew that about Opera and Firefox. I thought they were just slow because they were cross-platform (and obviously that will be a factor, too).

Well, my hidden copy of Firefox on the (Windows) school network no longer works (sabotage? :gasp: ), so I'm gonna try out Opera there. What's good about Netscape?

nothing?,- it basicly uses the dangerous IE framework (spyware, activeX,toolbars?,..) alternatively and primery the Firefox one. It´s basicly a Firefox branch with the IE- tab function.

THough they recently (a few weeks ago) announced that they would start completely over again based on the Firefox source code but this time different as the current one. So no one knows if they will again emebd IE funtionality or just strictly Firefox mode enhaced with full of their services & advertisements.

I understand that firefox must be good, but I use my internet explorer more often, and Iam having a lot of problem with this intel ad that real hogs on cpu power. The design of the ad. banner itself is flawed with so many duplications without thinking of the hog it can create on the user's pc (optimization). BAD DESIGN/IDEA/IMPLEMENTATION/OPTIMIZATION. Can anyone do something about it :(

Sorry folks but I'm not seeing that issue duplicated on any of the machines that I connect to FK with. Thats not to say that its not happeneing, cleary theres a problem so I have requested that the Intel ad be pulled from FK until they can get it fixed. I'll let you know what I find out. Genesis, haven't seen that one. I was talking about the one with the tigers tunning in it, that said 'PERFORMANCE', and 'RESPONSIVENESS'. Also the snowflake one. Basically any Intel Core 2 Duo advert.

My IE window went into Not Responding state due to the swatter ad. and crashed. I hope someone's still doing something about it.
