[wip] PaperPool
I thought its about time I gave this new fangled papervision a go, so this is the beginnings of Paperpool.
Lots to go on it... but its concept start :D

Im also looking for any guidance on computer pool ai....
-
oh yeah, thats what I'm talking about
nice one.
-
Very nice, I'm getting around 20fps, which I think is fairly good for 3D in flash.
Can't wait to see what becomes of this :)
-
Nice start, I love pool, so I'm looking forward to see this!
Here's a link to a linux pool game with AI, and the source is available. Looking it over might give you a few ideas to work from!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
-
Very impressive. You've nailed the 3d really well, though I'm wondering if you could hack it a bit and replace the polygon balls with a smooth spherical primitive
I started a pool game a couple of years ago, it's not an easy game to make, even when you've got the physics sorted out.
Question is - do you make it multiplayer, or go for single player with opponent AI?
-
Very nice demo, I want to see it finished
-
Good job, you are off to a great start on this game. This physics is neat, especially the first person perspective when you are about to shoot. Good job!
I really look forward to the final product of this game.
-
it says 58fps but it freezes my computer (opera 9.5 AMD 64 3500+)- perhaps just with the minority of browsers
-
Seriously FK, how the hell do you manage so many games at once? You just released Vector like what... 5 days ago...
-
I get on a roll :D then I want to try new ideas out... and then the next thing you know theres a game :D
-
Mark, does this site "support you"? In the sense that you can spend all day on making games? If so... that must be SWEET!! ;-D
I got 14fps
-
I sold flashkit to internet.com in 2000, did alright, but I have nothing to do with it now except hanging out in this forum :D
I have a 'full time' freelance contract with an agency in Sydney, but spend 2 hours a day on game dev :D (I get to the office early to avoid traffic!)
I just like making games. There is something very satisfying about it!
-
Yeah I usually get on a roll too, but I can't draw for **** so there's no reason usually to finish the dev for a fresh idea with crap graphics. :)
-
Always look forward to your demos Mark and this is the best one yet.
I'm just about to release a little trivia/gambling game actually (sort of ties in with the pub theme) it's done but I'm looking for ways to encrypt the score. I'll pop it up here in a couple of days.
-
Whatever it is you're taking to produce games so quickly, I want it! I don't care if the side-effects will have me wearing brown patches on my pants for the rest of my life, just gimme! :D
Seriously though, another awesome game. Vector was freaking intense - one of the best Flash games I've played in a damn long time (complimented by the fact that I crapped all over Squize' high score).
My only suggestioin is to maybe add an option to skip the wait for the balls to finish rolling (ie. as soon as bal makes contact, add a skip button or mouse click function that jumps to the balls' end positions), as my system couldn't get more than 9 fps. Otherwise, I can't wait to play the finished product.
Viza
-
yeah the skip button is a good idea... I also have a freeview option in there as well but its not connected to anything yet... I just added ball potting, but not the cushion collisions yet... Im about to hit tonypa's tutorials for that :D
-
Mark do you use OOP in your games? And if you do...you go 100% OOP, using only .as files or you just use, lets say, 50% of the code in classes ?Or no classes at all?
-
Awesome job, although it only runs at 10 fps on my computer. But it is still playable. I am looking forward to see it finished and hopefully not eating more performance at that state as it probably won't be playable with less fps.
-
Mark, do you read my msn chats or something mate ? First GWars, now 3D pool. Stay the hell away from Uridium and a 2.5D Prince of Persia with physics ok ? ;)
Really brave game to attempt, and looking sex so far mate, good work. I still want to do a 3D pool game, but I want to see how yours turns out first to see if it's worth me doing one.
"I crapped all over Squize' high score"
Beginners luck mate :P
Squize.
-
I wanted to convert 2d physics to 3d but I have no idea how you get the 8 on the 8-ball to move correctly so great job.
I have been wondering how long until someone has a go at a 3D pool game in Flash. Go as fast as you want making this mate :) Cannot wait to see the final result.

Cimmerian: My latest games are in AS3 which pretty well means it has to be oop, that said Im still getting my head around it and im a pretty sloppy coder at the best of times.
Leechmaster: Its using the papervision engine and they keep optimising that which means I should get more pace as well.. this engine is also very un optimised its proof of concept stuff at the minute... then Ill try and tweak it more.
Squize: Its my job to give you a run for your money :D I might look into uridium too.... but prince of persia is yours.... actually the truth be told I have a long list of games to develop, all in varying states, but 3d pool kinda came out of nowhere... its the frigging AI thats scaring me.
programicks: The rolling of the balls correctly was very tricky indeed, but in papervision not too bad... if you ever go that way google rotateArbitraryAxis and that will help you know end in papervision. The problem with papervision at this point is that its lacking tutorials and good examples!
-
That's really cool! How did Yahoo Pool work? Just a sprite sheet loaded with lots of orientations? It was pure 2D as I recall.
-
yeah I looked at a 2d version but the trig is pretty heavy... so I figured Id let papervision take care of the trig for me :D
The other advantage of papervision is the ball cam and free vierw modes which are pretty cool :D
