is it me or is the master all washed up?
Night of the living dead - classic master piece
Dawn of the dead - classic late 70's horror
Day of the dead - pushing it but very 80's
Land of the dead - pretty bad almost all down hill
Diary of the dead - watching it right now but about half way through and it is awful- the acting, "youtube" style of directing and video, and plot is weak.
What are all your thoughts? A sequel to Diary is already announced :rolleyes:
keep in mind diary of the dead had something like a 3 million dollar budget.. that doesnt go as far as it used to.
And why did it only have a 3 million dollar budget? You would think with a name like his he would get more backing. Land of the dead really was close to the bottom for him...
erm correction 10 million. I think because land of the dead was so crappy he wasnt getting the backing he would normally get. the last good zombie film from him wasnt even from him, it was a remake of one of his films. also land of the dead was his first directing of a zombie film since 1985 so maybe hes just rusty.
he's done and he's been done for a long time.
He's got two amazing horror films to his credit, but that was ages ago. He's just like Copolla, he rode his early successes into the 80's, where he only managed to churn out a bunch of worthless crap!
Speaking of burned out directors....wtf happened to John Hughes? The guy was unstoppable in the mid eighties and then his career took a total tank dive and now he just writes sequels to the Beethoven movies...wtf?

he hasnt had a good movie since... his first movie.. unless you enjoyed unbreakable for what it was.
Finally finished it. Wow was that awful. The acting was just horrendous and the plot of the whole thing with the character development and the end just was SO bad.

what about the underlying message?
He is still pretty good at writing scripts with a message and what I think the main part of this movie was was the deteriorating morals of the youth and the relationships between humans. I just think the way he approached it and how it was executed in the end was terrible. The group of kids were awful actors that really ruined the relationships that could of come out of the script and they were all just a bunch of student film makers. There wasn't any real world connections like that of Dawn of the Dead where it was a group of adults from all different backgrounds coming together. Yes there was obviously different backgrounds from the kids but just not strong enough. This film left a bad taste in my mouth and it really felt like a new upcoming director debuting his first film not a classic master.
Rather than Romera losing the plot, perhaps the old zombie horror flick genre has simply run it's course.

I've seen it. Watch it and don't expect much- it is what it is. Be warned though it is pretty graphic and obviously bad acting :)
i am legend didnt have zombies, they had thinking, intelligent creatures unable to be out in the daytime. if anything they were vampires.

I've over my desire for gore. I want artistry. The kind where the director says something by the way a head gets taken off or what it lands on.
Slither was good at that.
Either way, I would have been more entertained with scenes depicting civilizations break down rather than starting clear into the aftermath. The opening shot was about the only impressive one.Quote:

You want artsy? Like HOW artsy? Because you can go pretty deep into independent films just not a lot of people either understand/enjoy them.
Ok people what have you all seen that blew you away- not just new ones. I have a list of movies I want to see just hard to get over what one to chose and then just go and actually watch it.
Like Audition artsy. The way each interview was framed matched the personality of the person. A lot of independent film is independent because the directors are simply not artists. I'm not going to stare at a void for two hours just because I'm afraid to be the only one who doesn't get it.
Have you seen any of his other films? If you like gore and artsy you should check out "3...Extremes" all 3 shorts are amazing. I actually just watched the feature length "Dumplings" that that director made after liking the short so much. I have the second "3...Extremes" but have yet to watch it. Maybe that is what I will watch later tonight.

But mostly a general fact is that zombies are the undead come back to life. In i am legend they are all very much so alive, having never died, They are just infected by the virus which has changed them physically and mentally into more of a wild pack animal. A new race of homosapiens.

nope, they are infected. although they are closer to zombies then the creatures in I Am Legend.. and after much thought iv decided that the resident evil movies are the worst thing to happen to zombies in recent years.
I only watched part of the first one and hated it for ruining the games. I doubt I will ever see the others. In RE those aren't technically zombies either if we go by your definition(and your links...). They are just like I Am Legend and 28 Days Later

The comparison between Romero and Copolla wasn't really on their work, but on the fact that both of them are washed up and overrated.
Diary of the Dead was awful. The best part of the movie was a deaf amish guy. Besides that, it sucked, and the acting was horrible.
Actually, the entire horror genre has sucked for years. In the USA I mean. Can you tell me of a really good horror movie that's come out of Hollywood in recent years? Every good movie of that genre is coming from Asia and Latin America, and then hollywood remakes it, and somehow, they make it suck.
the decent was the last movie that i saw that gave me teh creeps.
I've seen a bundle of gore flicks Ichi and all. Audition stands out because to me it wasn't trying to be a gore flick. It was a real story, just fk'd up.Quote:

The I am legend monsters were somewhere in between. They weren't undead and had pack mentality. They weren't immortal or in control of their facilities like a vampire. They fall into a category I'll call "reverted" where one is reduced to cave-man status giving them small brains and extra strength.
The scene in Decent where the chick gets stuck about gave me a full on panic-attack. (Not that hard considering they were a big part of my life.)
Ichi is one of the most over the top gore movies- that was serious. Because there is always Dead Alive :)
I will have to think of some good movies and suggest some later tonight.

28 days later is explained in its sequel 28 weeks later..England was infected with a virus that mutated through any opening hole in the human body..eyes, ears, swet. When even one drop of infected blood enters the body, it takes less than 60 seconds for the body to mutate into a ranging feeding frenzy.
England is isolated to contain the disease.......second movie focuses on the family impact of the disease.
I am legend I thought, had more of the rabies effect..In that humans acted in hunting pacts etc. When I watched it I had just been medicated up on 20 mg's of morphine so I was a bit wacky when I watched it. Now that I have seen it again, the only part I liked was when the main character did something right in the end.
I guess the term washed up is very subjective, then. I consider this man a god of the industry who has been involved in (directing, writing, producing, exec producing) some of the biggest films ever. First of, I'd consider Cotton Club and the Outsiders to be among his topflight directorial offerings, but the rub comes in the fact that he's been able to use his fame to put out projects that he believed in that may or may not ever have the same critical acclaim or financial gain, but quality projects nonetheless (New York Stories, Tucker.) And no, I don't consider Peggy Sue among his best work. :rolleyes:Quote:
