I'd have to say that even though we classify paintings and sculptures and whatever else as "art" it comes down to how we feel about whatever piece we look at. It's a whole lot harder to say "that's not art" than it is to say "I love it [a painting]."
Switching to music, but a very similiar thought:
I took a music appreciation class in college this semeseter, it basically covered music from 13th century to 20th century styles such as jazz, avant garde, etc.
The styles we looked at were: Middle Ages, Baroque, Classical, Romantics, Modernists, Opera, and a few other genres in there.
I have never been a fan of opera, but I love classical and such composers as Verdi, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven and Mahler.
And I found even more that I am now addicted to listening to. When we listened to opera, I did not like it all that much, but with an open mind I could see the beauty in it, and how it is telling a story both in the music and the lyrical parts. And I can 100% see why so many people enjoy it.
So relate that to art.
What one person sees and their opinion does not mean that the chosen work is not art to someone else. We all find a beauty in things around us, and we all find it in our own ways.
Take a look at the current state of Internet graphics. Most of us who use Flash are used to seeing very futuristic backgrounds and images. Sites such as http://www.vir2l.com
are what I am talking about. These new media sites and designers are pushing amazing ideas and images on their viewers.
How many times do you see on the Internet graphics representing Monet, Picasso, or the inside of the Sistine Chapel? Or Reanissance painters or impressionists?
Not often.
Someone who is a fan of those styles might look at new media art and style and not care for it at all. "Too futuristic, too many shapes" they might say.
Becuase these people are basing their opinions on how they like older paintings, does this mean that the new styles are not art? I don't think so, just in the same that people who create new media art can't justify looking at the stuff the other people like and say it's not art.
Another thing I am sitting here thinking about is the difference between the words "art" and "artistic".
Think I'll leave that up to you all to think about, and I'll post about it later.
Take Care,

Art is to make more of what is less.. And I don't think anyone can do that..
I saw a programme on TV the other day saying a lot the best designers are dyslexic. This is because the logical side of your brain dosent work as well as the visual side. Included in the dyslexic greats was Peter Molyneux (sic.) amoungst others I forget.
Have you ever met a person that couldn't sing? What about someone that couldn't tap their feet? Paint? Construct? Create? There's art in everything we do day of our lives. It might be singing along with the radio on the way to work. It could be putting your outfit together for a big party. It could even be the way you arrange your dishes in the cabinets. Art has such a broad definition because it isn't just one thing, it's millions. To say that a single human being shows no sign of artisitc ability is ridiculous. It may not be in the tradtional sense, but it's most certainly present.
I see everybody has the same opinions ?
I think harra's right,
everything is art, it just takes us, the designers and artists to realise the potential in objects and other junk and turn it into something that is valuable.
We need everything around us to create what we do...without it we have no inspiration!!
to get inspired I need something interesting
You can't inspire from nothing
I beg to differ. The human mind works in interesting ways. It seeks input all the time.Quote:

When there is no input at all it fills the void with itīs own creations. Really freaky stuff when the threads of association roam free.
Thatīs when the truly original ideas are hatched, when a bored mind entertains itself.
I myself love to have lots of pictures, toys and modelkits as inspiration on my desk. But the truth is that these things lock your creative impulses into categories loosely based on the immediate input of your surroundings.
Good if you strive to create stuff inspired by genres, not so good if you want to be original.

...it's your subjective imho
My god, I've just got back to this thread after the weekend and its huge! Obviously there's a bone of controversy here.
I think at the end of the day there is no right or wrong about what is and what makes Art. If history's greatest philosophers couldn't work it out then there's fat chance we can!
Here's a thought though: what if the boundaries of what Art is never changes, just our perceptions of it?
I totally agree!!
that's what causes all this controversy in the art world!!
that's why we have successful artists and designs, they changed their perspective just a little bit and looked at the world and what they were doing in a different way
And that's one of the most important things about the web right now..we all have this great opportunity to push the boundaries!!
Anyone already saw the new http://www.wddg.com ?
Well, I like that very much:
- it's appealing
- eyecatching (and "ear-catching")
- I wanna go back to this site
- innovative
- futuristic (pushing the boundaries of actual design trends)
- ...
- and very HIP!
Now is this art?
Dunno, I'm really having difficulties in finding what should be "Art" on the internet or in webdesign...
Maybe I'm to stuvk with the Idea and philosphy of Fine Arts, but anyway...
I think the WDDG got some ZUPERFONKYPHENOMINALPHUTURISTICFANTASIC design there :)

And,as I already mentioned somewhere here above, you can't discuss taste nor colour.
But you can tell wether something "emotes" us or not...
nice site
btw guys don't go past contest
I already have a couple of nice splash pages sent to me

++splash page contest++
Dude! I can read it now.
Excellent!
thanks harra ;)
I don't think that the 'Art' movement has really caught up with the Internet yet. Great design, certainly, but when was the last time you saw a site that was arty?
That's good in a way though, because it means us web designers have no 'standards' to appeal to, meaning we can push the boundaries that little bit further.
It seems to me that web design is defined by the technology used within it, rather than aethetic appeal. How many times have you really liked a site because of some funky new effect you haven't seen before? It might not be 'Art', but it looks good. Yes, looks play a part, but at the end of the day the Internet is an interactive and bandwidth restricted medium. The best sites aren't arty, they're well designed, easy to use and download quickly. Why else has Flash taken off so well?

You said it right ;)
I'm almost convinced we should talk about "Design" (great design, that is!) instead of "Art"

yeah :) you just moved a bit off road ;)
