You think anyone can be a great designer ???

harder to pick than a broken nose this one..

i think there are 2 kinds of people, those who can imagine and envisage great art, in whatever form they choose; creative types, if you will. and those who cannot, people whose skills lie more in say, accountancy;)

it seems like what a lot of people are talking about is whether or not a you have to have the ability to transform what you can see in your mind into something others can share to be called an artist..

so do you define an artist as a person with the capacity to come up with the idea, or a person with the capacity to execute it?

personally i'd like to think the first was true, but when reality bites, doubt anybody could get a job solely by thinking pretty pictures.

there you go, a lot of philosophical rubbish and no closer to the answer. that's me down to a tee, that is.

explain what art is. I think the guys in my office had this discussion but I wasn't working with them when they had :)

Ah, this thread's taken on a life of its own... :)

But to get back to the point:
What I've picked up from all the posts so far (aside from some very interesting theories) is this: Anyone can ATTEMPT to be a designer, but not everyone can succeed.

One of the big differences between Art and design is design is primarily an employable asset. I'm sure all of us here like designing anyway, but would we be doing so much if we weren't paid for it? Myself, I'll design during the day then I may go home and paint some art (or at least my attempt at it :D). So design is for earning money, while art is rapidly diminishing as a profession and becoming more of a popular hobby.

Now consider that employers will only want GOOD designers (nb: I'm not suggesting that they know what a good designer is ;)) and you'll see that only those with 'it' will ever really get anywhere.

So: not everyone will make a good designer BUT... not every good designer will fulfil their potential.

Whew! I hope that made sense...

art is art if that it is what the intention was when it was created. I'd doubt that the elephant, mentioned previously, intended to create a piece of artwork - it probably just intended to get paint onto the canvas - you never know though...!

The elephants art perhaps only became art when someone conciously made the decision that that is what it was...but considering that the elephant probably didn't know it was creating art, the elephant is not an artist, let alone a good one. The artist here is perhaps the person who intended for the elephant to create the artwork..... mmmmmmm....

My 2c on this:
it does not matter are you an artist or not, or can you draw, or do you have a vission, or are you human at all What matters is who is going to judge your work. In this sense even an elephant can do cool stuff right ? :D

I'd reckon that design is about creating a product which has a function and appearence that appeals to the audience it is aimed at. The better it serves its purpose or conveys its message - the better the product is designed....

SisterBlue - I totally agree with you - take the example of the new G4.Apples target market is mostly designers. The design they came up with is downright sexy.

I'm want the Dual-G4, but I'm having trouble convincing my boss to pay the $17 500 bill :D Any suggestions?

Yah, that´s the one I want too. Trying to figure out how to get the dosh for it and a studiodisplay.
I´ll propably settle for the iMac snow.
