Hey guys! I'm of the opinion that there ist a big different between an artist and a designer!!!
So everyone, who made something, is an artist, but that doesn't mean that he is an designer!! For me Desgin is making something which most people like!! And i think that's the great different!! Artist make something, designers make something which is liked by the masses!!!!

The masses liked Gainsborough's Pinkie and Blue Boy--does that make them a design instead of art (actually, I view them as illustrative). Design has to have an innate utility (usabilitiy). Ars gratia ars. Art is for art's sake, it doesn't need to have any utility.
Well the discussion went off into what great design/art was a
couple dozen posts earlier and I feel it missed the point.
The word "famous" was also used in that original post.
David Carson didn't go to Art School, but Matt Owens went to
Cranbrook and Ian Anderson at Designer's Republic just
decided to open a design firm one day. There are so many
variables that go into why these designers ARE succesful and
what is GREAT... Carson had on the job experimentation with
Transworld, his ideas were hardly new. Every punker in the
world was doing that type of design in the 80's. Matt Owens
got 3 years of play time at Cranbrook, they were not born
overnight. They were also "lucky" to be well distributed.
For me, I loved all that deconstcructionism (preinternet) in
the early 90's. Design looked like art, the fine artists I
know started talking trash about designers cause we were on
their turf. But was it good design? What do yo think? What
is the role of a designer? How do you do a project? I
usaully start of with a Word document, a page of text, or
when I am doing sites, information hiearchies. Can anyone
make that into say, a compelling Annual Report or a website?
Hell no.
Design is very hard, I learn things everyday, in no way do I
think I am anywhere close to mastering it.It is a
collaboration. If you can't deal with people, u need to be painting.
I think the origianl post had some of the feeling I have in
it. How can someone with zero experience be hired as an art
director (cause they know flash?)? Because of the net
economy, so many sites that need to be designed. How often,
as someone mentioned, do you go "ahhhhhhh...."? Not often.
How many times have you designed something beautiful only to
have the client ruin it??
Like Aimes the chair designer, you have to have both utility and a certain flair for the unique. I don't think a single venue hack can carry that off. It's hard to make something prosaic and dull compelling to an audience, if you have that talent--you are truly an artist (designer). I hope the field doesn't institute credentials in order to qualify for the title. I hope they continue to base it on experience, and demonstrated talent.

What field is that? Internet Design? Ad agencies and marketing firms couldn't give a crap about that. They are so geared with profit motives they are jumping into net design and couldn't give a crap what your work is like. If you can do any HTML they want to hire you as a designer. They want designers to do code. They want flashers to sit and write all the Pearl backend. How many friends do you know that are caught in that situation? Look at the US national job postings for web designers. "Looking for someone who knows C++ and photoshop. Flash a plus". Where does it say, "Strong portfolio and demonstrated design skills"?

Do you remember when you were little and your mom dragged you to the Art Gallery and you wondered how come people paid 250,000 dollars for a bunch of weird looking lines. Everyones art is different, there is no criteria to meet whatsoever. If your client is happy then you have done a good job. Kep in mind that as we are desingers our goal is to help each other out, and not see who is best for ranking purposes. The funny thing is that I consider myself a fairly good designer, considering my age, and I can't draw worth a bean. Really, everyone is talented in their own way. Ok, i teach and love to stay positive but how can you get anywhere, as a designer or industry, saying that? i am commenting on this because you say "as long as the client is happy" right after it so i know you are talking out of the context of art. I couldn't disagree more. Critiques and reviews (like the site checks on this board) are absolutely essential. And there are very few clients that don't need at least a little education. Either take the time to lead them down the path to good design or cash the paycheck and head to the beach for the weekend.No way. I wouldn't work for a firm that had that attitude.

Sorry guys, not all of you can be an art proffesionals
He is speaking of "art" in a graphic/web design way(not physical or natural artistic talent) and I know that many people who aren't gifted in that respect are fully capable of delivering great web graphics.
I looked at his site & it didn't "make it real" for me.
