but i've been reading through this post and everyone has said very sensible stuff.
personally, my dad is quite open minded about what i do ON HOLIDAYS (web design) ... but he'll be on my @$$ if any of this "computer stuff" as he puts it, get's in the way of my studies (civil engineering) during session
right now, i have three weeks left in my vacation and i'm working day and night on my site.. ( http://www.fadzter.com ) coz i know that once i resume university, i won't touch a comp for a whole year.. (yup.. it's that tough a course).
advice: none of us can really predict the future of the web.. (nomstradamn-us didn't even know about a frikin internet)... so why not take up a "backup career" .. just pick any field you like.. and work hard at it... it's just gonna be a 3-4 year sacrifice but i believe it's worth it.
i'll be thru with campus in 2 years and i know for a fact that i'll be in web-design + IT for a long time coz that's where my heart is.
i understand that it's a parent's obligation to guide his kids into doing what's best for them, but it's also difficult for them to exactly understand what we see. i mean tell me of a 60-year old web designer.. i don't think the CAN exist! ... It's a very new profession and it's more or less a young-fun thing to them. we also have to understand that when they were born there was no such thind as TV, Telephone, etc.... telex was the in-thing then.. now we expect them to appreciate that there is a "profession" in what we do!... it sure is kinda hard..
i really liked what Justin said: show him what you do.. amaze him and tell him that this is the life you want!
ok.. sorry if i've bored you all with all this, but i just believe that it is a Very Decent Profession and that Can be accompanied with FUN !

Web Design, for slackers????
Well I am a web designer, and I am a slacker of the highest order so I guess it is true in some cases.
I was well lucky though, I bluffed my way through uni to get my degree (in history!!) byy doing the minimum amount possible, nearly got kicked out for not doing enough every other month.
As for work, I have also been very lucky that I have had a really good contract for a year now, really good pay, living in Duiblin, very cool city and working with some really cutting edge flash with people I like.
Unfortunately the boss terminated my contract yesterday as they have run out of money, he can't do that though as he has to give me 4 weeks. hahahahah
well what can I say, I slack and work therefore I am. or something like that
If you are interesting in something, you will work it happily and with fun. So view by otherz esp. the old man, he will think that you r slacker ~ !!! May b they never feel the excite n happiness for such achievement.
Sad ~ may b they only think that sad n boring is the professional mean ~ =þ ~
Well ~ I don't mind for u go out 2 find a job 2ml ~ but for my experience ~ y not u go to University n wasting their money n hav fun ? Meanwhile u still can concentrate abt ur web design n find girl friend ? It is DAMN fun man ~

1. u dont hav enuf budget 2 hav fun
2. u cant upgrade ursef 2 international class of web design
3. u cant find any one support u except us ~ =]
