Had to bring up the contrast up with the other 2 to get a different feel but the one of the deep purple sky came out after switching the camera to manual and measuring the exposure of the room inside where I was (pointed to the white ceiling) then turned it out to the sky and took the shot. Guess you can get a similar saturated effect with a filter.

These are highly experimental. I never took night pictures before. I had fun with the clouds rolling over the full moon. Thanks for the positive feedback on my trampoline pics. My little brother doesn't quite know how to front flips yet. He always goes flying in the air at wierd angles.

hey Aria, is there any special way you have to set the exposure for a camera so night pictures come out better? I'd like to take a few but i'm not sure if i want to waste a roll and end up w/ some random blurs and completely blank pictures :) would i need a flash, or just a prominent light source to shoot at?

well yes there is - it might be easier to switch to manual so that you have better control of it.

Being in control of your aperture and able to close it down is the key. Because you are shooting in darkness, if the camera selects the aperture automatically, it will naturally select a very wide aperture due to the low light conditions. When the flash discharges, the camera doesn't have time to close down the aperture. Hence, the image will be greatly overexposed which is what happens with the digis as well. So make sure you are able to set the aperture before the photo is taken.

Use a tripod to keep the camera steady in order to avoid blurs and be prepared for some long exposures.

Use fast film - i use 800 and above for low light conditions but you can go above that if you like grain which is also more evident on B&W, usually with color you get high saturation.

Finally start bracketing between shots and keep logs of your fstops. This will come very handy to you later. Use these to document your exposures properly , helps also to get a contact sheet at the lab for better reference

hmm, well, i dont think my camera even *can* control the aperture automatically - i guess that can be a good or bad thing. either that or i'm thinking the wrong thing is the aperture - i'm a little clueless when it comes to the terminology.

anyway, i'll try what you said out, would 400 speed film be usable? or should i go for 800.. well, i guess i'll figure it out, expect some badly exposed low light photos soon :D

no prob - if your camera is an old manual then dont worry , you can still take great pics and learn in the process about how to control exposure and take readings :)

400 ISO is medium speed and is ok - with a faster speed youll get better results under low-light conditions, if you cant get hold of 800, use the 400 one and stop down to the smallest f (opening up your aperture involves going down or stopping down to the smallest f)

anyway, i think i'll just play around based on what you said, and see if things come out right. that might be the best way to figure it out :) do you think trying to find a manual for the camera would be a good idea?
