pfuuuu ... i'm hugely depressed tonight : i've sent an example of the artwork of Two Kingdoms game ( artwork and in games tiles ) for being hired as a shareware designer for 2D tiles and i received a negative answer .... trust me, the company i sent the example to would certainly need better artwork for their RPG games, that are really addictive, but with a poor artwork ... :(
What's wrong with me, it's been one year now, that i'm unemployed ( well, i'm not talking about freelance jobs, but i'm really craving a company to work for : luxregina (my freelance activity) doesn't brings me back really diverses clients ...) .... What's the hell wrong with me ??? i'm unexpensive and willing o work ....
Sorry to break away the topic, Two Kingdoms, will still be a free game and is not for sell ...
-
Strange, youre alway telling that the artwork shouldnt be to complicated, but you use your 'simple' artwork to get a job???
Maybe you can make the tile more dynamic. Like trees waving in the wind, or what about wheater. Snowstorm or whatever??? These things could make the game look much more impresive.
-
No ...I still think that i'm right : trying to save some processor time for Flahh isn't stupid : for now, you only have the map, which is okay ...but how will the game behave when i will put up the enemies ??? if i don't try to keep the game simple, so it can animate my bad guies without slowing down tooo much ... )
Actually, i'm a graphic guy that is caring a lot about processor friendly ressources ...which is kind of rare ( okay ...not that rare...i confess... )
What is the problem in that if it makes my game really "reactive" to player response ????
Of course, i'm not talking for you, but, in the letter i sent, i specified which were the flash limits, and why i wasn't going farther with the GFX ... of course (trust me ) i could do much better tiles ... but then, it would be a pain to integrate them into Flash ....

...and i would add that the "extra artwork" ( the one in the site ) wasn't supposed to be limited by anything .... whatecer ...they didn't think i was good enough to take care of their game ....:( and it makes me sad, cos their game was sounding really promising ....
Though, i would likr to close the chapter : here, we are meant to talk about Two Kingdoms ....not about me ...i'm sorry that i opened the subject to something more personnal ...i was really depressed, then ...

hic !!!! ( wine + biere )

hey lux
I just have to add one more thing about the 'companies' topic..it seems that somehow they don't see how hard you worked and willing to work..they don't see that you lovve what you doin and I don't understand it..I can't say from personal experience yet i still have to see but I have a feeling that that's what's gonna happen..gotta tell you ur doin a great job and I know how much time and work that takes..don't give up..also like they say "it is not what you know, it is who you know" and that pisses off more :)
just my 2 cents

Lux.. I feel sorry for you with that company thing. They are just stupid. They probably don't have enough funds to hire another (bad-ass;)) employee.
Btw, you've received my email?
I've just finished with the map switching. Now going to college, I've Programming Methods.. one of the classes I DO like. =P
Anywayz, when I get back home I will make it so you can set on where the screenview positions.(Meaning that if you input other XY coordinates for the player in the map xml file, the view centers on the player.)
When we talk about conputer recources: I've noticed that the scrolling is one of the BIG slow-downs. I've updated it a bit so it works a bit faster tho.

dont fret
just trailing off again....
i pretty much agree with what the others are saying. i like the design you do, especially your other websites (luxregina.com). i know i'm in a different situation to you because i'm in london but the industry seems to be quite low at the moment. i'm working at the company who made the osbournes site for mtv.co.uk at the moment ( http://www.mtv.co.uk/theosbournes/ ) but before that i had real trouble finding somewhere due to the slump in cool places to work.
i'd recommend sending your cv and url via email to as many companies as you can (you've probably done this but anyway). who knows what might happen.
good luck,
teii.
ps.maybe you just weren't right for that particular company....
pps.my (in need of a re-do) old portfolio is at:

that sucks but it got me a job!

Thank you guys for all that support !!!
Well, i feel a bit ashamed with the new day, to have posted that thing ... well....what is done is done, and it's been re-insuring to read your replies after all ...
rockron is right, the matter is not what you know, but who you know ...which is really unfortunate for a french guy freshly arrived to the States ...
Whatever, it's up to me now to make Two Kingdoms as good as possible, and have people excited playing it, to prove those people wrong
Thanks for the support again !
Jeroen -> i received your mail, and replied ...exciting news : it seems like there will be soon a new, more playable beta of Two Kingdoms ...:)
-
Tei -> i checked your site : it's great and have a neat, modern design ! ... and i loved the isometric "game-site-show-whatever" in the osbourne site !!!

Nice Guy Eddie (Mack) cheers for the link. There was some good reading there. Mad Sci's solution was so simple it was brilliant. I've switched over to your engine though, and kudos to ya, it's so versatile. I managed to get the scrolling working and I've ported my project over to it with no problems, though there does seem to be something weird happening with it. When I publish my movie, and run it on high quality, a portion of my map is missing. It's always the same portion. When I switch the flash player to low quality, the missing tiles appear. Weird. I guess it'll have to be run on low quality.
I also had a recurrence of the problem that appeared with 2kingdoms on Opera/Netscape. A few tiles cycle through all their frames continuously. And this happened in the flash player! I haven't been able to get it to happen again though.
Lux, good luck to you. I know how it is, I'm in exactly (read EXACTLY) the same position as you at the moment. Like Kim says, things aren't too good in our field down in London at the moment but persistence always pays off I guess. I hope! Anyway, don't let it get you down :)

scary game....
know what kdsh7...i had a really scary dream invoving the scary characters in your 'terry in the darkness' game last night. it was like a cross between your game and grand theft auto (which i've been playing obsessively to prepare for the release of vice city). really freaked me out.
sorry this has nothing to do with anything whatsoever but i thought you might like to know that your flash game has been subliminally beaming in my head!
you should change them to fluffy bunnies! i'm so tired now!
-
Ha, that's hilarious! Glad to know that the game's being played though :) But are you sure you want fluffy bunnies? White ones? With red eyes and enormous protruding incisors, nibbling incessantly at who knows what with little chittering sounds... You could be onto something there!
You're lucky you've got GTA3 to play - I've played it for only about 5 mins and it seemed great. Vice City looks brilliant (did you know Sony are releasing it's soundtrack to be sold in stores on 8 CD's! The soundtrack is going to be a greatest hits of the 80's compilation). Meanwhile, my beloved DC seems to be on it's last legs, as each time I am about to return home on a mission in Starlancer, the bloody thing resets itself...
