Bring Flash Footers Back!

you can force the user to have the right player but what if people don't want to have the latest player? They don't get to see FK? That's not really fair, there are legitimate reasons why people wouldn't want the latest version of the player and no good reason to force people to have it.

as mark said there is a lot more code and CPU time involved in embedding an SWF than an image, plus we can restrict SWFs to 1k in size and they could still; be total CPU hogs.

I would still like to see them back, it was a fun way to express yourself but I think aside from the security implications flash kit is just too big for flash footers any more.

Well, for people like me that could make some pretty cool effects in flash, but can't draw for crap, image footers aren't exactly expressing myself. I have other people draw mine.

And face it, most of the mods are against it, so it won't happen....

Unless we mug them and throw them in my cellar.

didnt read any of this, but here is my idea

I know their are still security issues, so make it an option to turn on or off, with a warning to make sure you have the updated player, and a confermation email too....or something like that, it oculd work.

i'd like to hear jstarkey answer to this issue :)

While Flash footers were pretty cool, they did waste a lot of system resources (a pile of Flash files on 1 screen .. if you have more than 1 tab with FK in it..)

I'd probably end up turning them off anyway.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the new W-H have Flash footers (re)enabled now?

great, so every page that loads has to detect what version of the flash player you're using, not to mention it probably has to be done for each embedded swf.

and then 20 animations are running at once on the screen, 7kb or not, scrolling is still going to suck.

THEN the mods have to waste their time making sure no one's footer uses sound, some insane AS or whatever else shouldn't happen.

THEN people try to get smart and save settings in footers using sharedObejcts, and anyone who didn't specify deny for flashkit.com is going to start having craploads of SO's laying around.

No thanks, they really don't add anything.

Thats why they could be allowed again. If you didnt want them, you dont have to have them. No one was forced to have them. I thought it was a cool way to express yourself. I just recently started checking out this site again, and I was quite disappointed to find out they didnt work anymore.(I spent 15 minutes trying to figure out how to get it to work, before I discovered you couldnt:D)

I would like to see them, but i can understand the reasons that we dont have them.

Thats Were-here and not Flashkit with almost 500 000 members and 1000+++++ files to download. Think of that next time you get the timeout or an traffic error here .

This is an age old argument.
I must say I enjoyed looking at them, but once you had seen it once they got annoying - except the Whiz's which were cool!

As someone has already said, we [mods] are all against, so if john put it to a vote I doubt they would come back.
PLUS! We have already asked about it on behalf of other members and John gave a plain no!
Simple as.

The player security issue is one reason, and the other is the simple way of annoying people!
There was a foote ronce that called 50000 browserpages. for each impression on the page - and each one of those had 2 onExit loadups, so there are many MANY ways that footers can be abused.

And for someone that mentioned file sizes and souhnd stuff.
The old rules were:


Maximum size: 300 by 40px, 15k file size!
NO SOUND, none at all! Not even with a button that turned it on!
LoadMovies were imcluded in the 15k limit, after one member (me!) added 45k in a 45byte file by using LoadMovie.

:) Good points on the abuse of them but if you only allowed members with over 500 posts who took this forum seriously then there would be no abuse.

As for people finding them annoying... disable them...
