(as I'm typing this another popup notifys me that my system is shutting down in 1 minute, aargh!
i've been trying to run a virus scan but dosen't give me enough time
also trying to up
**** 52 sec till shut down
Have you guys checked CERT or securityfocus? I doubt anything on FK is making RPC calls to your machine. I'll check around to see if it's anything that's going around.

Look in your startup folder in the start menu. If webdav.exe is there, it looks like you've been nailed by someone.
patchig 1 computer.. 1 computer isn't giving me enough time.. arghhhhhhh .. now look where in the start up menu .. van ya give me a path to find it?
start>menu>blah>i'm dumb>folder?
Not sure about XP but it can't be too far off from 2000
C:\documents and settings\user name\start menu\programs\startup
Check through all the users on that machine, including default user and administrator.
go to START, CONTROL PANEL,ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS,COMPONENT SERVICES
then select SERVICES (local) from the left hand window. Find "REMOTE PROCEDUE CALL (RPC)" from the right hand window, right click, porperties. You can then set it so windows won't reboot each time.
This will solve it in the short term.
Do a virus check, I had a worm on my PC.
Get the patch from MS.
Why dont you troublshoot? Isnt that what you do in a case like this?
Common troublshooting questions:
Any new installs/hardware/printers?
Email attachements?
Hanging out at porn sites? :o
Perfom a clean boot to eliminate any of the above as a possibility.
*chances are its not a virus unless you launched a *.vbs *.exe or some other executable on your system...*

It seems that most PC´s that are connected 24/7 are affected...
nah never been there..not a clue how i got this one.. i have AV on all the time cause the nature of me business.. but it slipped thru somewhre
vamps, read my last post, apparently hackers are to blame, so you'll need more then just nav, but also a program like Zone Alarm Pro
i've been having a system error all day long. I can't disconnect my modem, and no popups work (either in internet or other apps that use popup windows, like the event viewer)
researching i found the error in microsoft
it's some kind of RCP error. I just realized the copy paste also crashes so i cant quote what is on microsoft site :(
This sucks, you think is something general, or just a coincidence, because now it's 3 persons (including me) who have problems with rcp.
I'm running win2k though, no xp.
Makes me smug to still be using 98SE! :D
I had a similar issue a long time back with 2K.A.S reinstalled - used the ERD and it fixed it!
You DID have an ERD didnt you??? :D
This just in from symantec:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com...ster.worm.html
its a nasty little worm behind it all.
Man, this is a nasty virus! I know 3 people that have the RPC problem, and I just got a phonecall from my sister saying her's is shutting off!
hehe... :D
yeah i think i got it, i cant read the article right now cause copy paste is disable and popups won't work. i just know i have msblast.exe on my system32 folder.
I'm downloading the patch frm microsoft right now.
[edit]i think mine had that, and i just cured it  i wonder how i got infected though.[/edit]
flushy, you shouldn't joke about viruses....even if it's a joke, people can take it serious and you can get in trouble.
downloading the patch from MS now
Thanks to everyone in this thread, and Nerdels who gave me some information over AIM.
Buffer overflow using the RPC service, the worm executed fake code and crapped out an error. ;)Quote:

I got this too, as I mentioned in another thread, and my AV reported a `DcomRpc.exploit virus, some sort of trojan as I think that article states.
It only happened when I was online and luckily I had updated my virus definitions this morning.
the security patch seemed to fix it fine.
does anyone have any direct links to the file download because my autoupdate doesnt show that on my list heh...
all I get is a .net Framework update...
see the MSN link in my footer. that should take you straight there for XP 32bit
thx alot
right after the wizard is complete... it's finished correct?
Yeah, I got this error too.
Coincidentally, I got it after I viewed this thread. But all's well, Vamps told me how to fix it.
The win2K fix is from July 16th, so those of you who let automatic update run regularly should be ok.
Nasty little bugger isn't it?
Then again, remember the messsenger pop-ups? I'd call that a gaping hole.
Vampstko, love the porn in the screen lol.
Whoa! Deja vu!
That happened at work as well today. I'm online & that bloody message came up on my boss' computer (XP Home) while I was getting the orders from Outlook Express. It happened like 3 times. I thought it was because I had IE open as well but after I went on again, I left OE on only & the connection on for about 3 & 1/2 minutes & nothing.
I was also trying to take a darn screenshot of it but XP wouldn't let me for some reason.
