We have school in 4 terms (2 semesters). In between those terms we have a 2 week break and over Christmas we have a 7-8 week break. So thats how we do it down here.

In Canada their are usually usually 2 semesters in University (not broken into terms) one from Aug-Dec or Sept-Dec (depends on the school) and the other from Jan - April or Jan - May (again it depends on the school)
I'm pretty sure the same thing goes for the USA.
Also, isn't it winter in Aussie land this time of year (being the land down under everything is reversed??)
So technically you get your summer vacation (in your summer -December) while us Canadians are freezing our a$$es off going to and from class ;)
