Apparently the new copy protection measures will tie your copy of flash to one particular machine. Now don't get me wrong I think people should pay for software, the upgrade price is fairly reasonable and I shouldn't have a problem coinvincing my boss to upgrade our 3 licences. (I work for a small company with 3 developers).
Im sure many people on these boards also like to 'play' with flash at the weekend or after work on their own pet projects. Often the most innovative work i've seen has been done out of office hours. What will happen when the flash community has to shell out for their own individual licence ($699 each) from their own pocket?
I can't see my boss also paying for second copies so that we can each install flash at home.
What are peoples thoughts?
What always annoys me is that MM portray their changes as huge revolutionary new technology without acknowledging the fact that Flash developers have pushed their product to deliver amazing projects in the past - without components, "powerful data-binding", forms-based development etc.
Without that attitude, the changes might be much more welcome.
Also, I am a Flash 'developer' but not a hard-core programmer. What I enjoy about Flash is the mixture of graphic design and coding - if it gets more and more separated now, that would be a great shame. And if it turns into a copy of VB with 'forms-based development', that would definitely ruin it for me.
Aria is right - we need to be patient and wait until we can get our hands on it but everything I've read so far just makes me dread this new release ;)

actually, I'm going to eat at least some of my words. There are some features that I really welcome - even though they should have been included a long time ago:
- decent search-and-replace
- Alias Text option
- Illustrator 10 support
- plugin architecture (to some extent)
- CSS support (possibly)
- Macros and History Panel
- improved bandwidth profiling/size reports
We are still developing for Flash 5 player, so I won't be able to use a lot of the features, including most of the components (the same goes for MX), so I'm mainly interested in workflow improvements at the moment.
I still hate the patronising marketing tone they use but my impressions are a little more positive now ;)

I'm looking forward to moving away from the frame based metaphor which sometimes got in the way of what you were trying to do. There seems to be lots of small improvements throughout the upgrade, the strings panel should help with multi-lingual projects.
Now I just need to convince my boss to upgrade us :)
So my company has Devnet, and a couple other Flash licenses.
With the Flash license that comes with Devent, do we get 2 upgrade licenses, one for MX2004 AND one for MX2004 Professional? Or just one that covers either/or?

Will AS2 compile components for use with a header file?

I'm hope they eventually protect source code from

I hope they finally (among others)
1. Require you to declare a variable before using it.
2. Enforce 'public' and 'private' class members.

Is it me or did the full version of Flash just go up 200 dollars with the Flash MX 2004 Pro addition? Freakin $700 dollars for FMX 2k4 Pro?

Someone made a really good point on one of the other discussion forums - since these companies claim that rampant piracy drives up the cost of the software, shouldn't the new security scheme make the software cost less, not more?
Well, theres the economy / inflation that helps account for the price increase. But the price of 24/7 support less the price of piracy would seem to even things out to me...

I think they are going to drive off a lot of new developers with this release. WIth each new version MM puts out, the learning curve becomes steeper and steeper, it went from knowing some basic programming concepts, to now having to know how to do full fledged object oriented programming? What I liked about 5 and MX was that I didn't have to worry about variable declaration, and I could throw new variables into the mix very easily, as well as have them change datatypes as I deemed fit.
With regards to the product activation, as someone posted before, one company had massive problems with product activation, and actually lost money because of it. I think Macromedia should just drop it to relieve themselves of the headaches they will be dealing with. If there are pirates, so what? A lot of people can't afford the unnecessarily high pricetag Macromedia puts on it just to do some little animations, or something for Newgrounds. For example, my brother's friend who's 16, who definitely cannot afford to purchase Flash right now, who is using my copy of Flash on his compouter. In essence, thats pirating, but he's getting exposed to the program. The 30 day trial period is not long enough for someone to fully get accustomed to the program before they decide to buy it.
Do people not understand that you don't have to use AS2. AS2 is for the programmers and such. They're targeting application developers with mx pro. No need to switch for the next couple of versions probably; although there probably will be some minor changes / enhancments in AS1 (and the new stuff).

I don't think you need to learn OOP to use flash, the potential is there to do advanced programming but you don't have to if you don't want to, you can just stick to frame actions with some interactivity, it's perfectly scalable I think.
also remember that most of this AS2 stuff isn't even supported from the flash scripting environment, you need to use external files to hold class information, so it's pretty invisible if you don't want to learn it. Nothing at all wrong with bring as closer to a proper programming language.
the thing that really pisses me off is MM's attitude, I know they're a business and I know they think they're doing the right thing, I'm sure they've had lots of little user studies amongst the flash blog clique, but to raise the price so much for relatively little, to force developers to run an activation service, to snub their noses up at the online community forums like flashkit, it's all just smacks of arrogance that is going to come back and bite them in the ass, and I hope it does! I make 60% of my living using flash but I'm finding myself more and more diheartened with MM and the way they're treating their customers AND their product line up.

If so, this is a pretty agressive and insulting act toward less-experienced developers - I know my way around Actionscript and I still occasionally switch back to normal mode, especially when teaching.
