As far as I can see, the community watchers have turned into bloggers and are focussing their efforts in that world.

Everyone talks about AS2.
So far I know the following facts(?):
1) AS2 can only be written in an external file, not within the Flash MX2004 environment
2)The compiled flashmovie uses regular Actionscript as codebase, so the new AS2 is basically a 'cover' on top of AS1.
Am I correct to say that current MX AS1 is not deprecated, and that AS2 is just a layer on top of AS1?
I'm so annoyed that everytime you have to rewrite movies, to be consistent with the standards. I worked one whole year! on a mayor flash based webside, and I am afraid that I will have to rewrite it again in say 5 years time because the flashplayer by than might not support AS1 anymore.
I don't mind expanding program languages, but why REPLACE it, beats me.
At the Macromedia side, or anywhere else, I so far havent seen any official policy on that matter.

Looks like I wont be upgrading thats a fact - I may even just drop back to Flash 5, none of the new ones beat that for layout anyway.
Old 14" CRT and MX just fills my screen at 1024/768 which is as high as I can go atm.
I may upgrade eventually, but more for Dreamweaver and Fireworks that anything else!

I'm surprised that AS2 is covered in this thread suddenly, since flash 2004 deals with a lot of new items(graphics, layout,new items, performance,price,AS etc.); I'd thought narrowing it down to a new AS2 topic would be useful, since it will put the focus on that matter and importance, and I believe that most flash developers are more interested in that particular feature of Flash 2004.
If a significant subject like AS2 itself needs 'cleaning up', within the 'lounge room' what else may I post than.

the coffee lounge isn't really the place for serious flash discussions of this type, you would be better off posting it in the actionscript forum where you're also more likely to find people that are in the know.Quote:

How many movies have you had to rewright? Are you authoring in flash four or something? Did you test your movie in the Flash 7 player? Works the same right? Didn't have to do anything? Why wouldn't your website be updated in 5 years? People get bored after a while, and who would go back to a website thats just the same old thing...Quote:

Whats being replaced? It's just like going from HTML to XHTML and whatever languages you want to cite. AS2 doesn't sound like it will be the way for you to go; so don't use AS2, use AS1. Do you use javascript. As AS1 is similar to JavaScript 1.1; AS2 is similar to JavaScript 2.0. Things evolve, improve &cQuote:

I see where you are coming from but also understand what the moderators have been saying.
You will get a much more fruitful conversation on such specific aspects of the new version in the actionscript forum. It is very likely that, in the lounge, it would degenerate quickly into a few pages of one-line inanities.
