The End of Flashkit

Remember the revolt after NerdInside/Clif's 2nd banning, where some members got banned or left due their feeling of unfairness towards mods?

And the future continuous leavings of some of FK's most frequent visiting/oldest members?

I've sure noticed FK is getting quiter and quiter as more members leave.

...There are now only a few members left that still regularly post that say, still remember the FK renovation, where the CL post counts got removed(which is a good thing).

So what is the future? Will FK coffee lounge be completely replaced with new members, only leaving a couple left, posting occasionaly?

What if Gerbo leaves? I remember him posting about that, and quite a bit of people said they'd follow through. What if? Would that be the end of flashkit?

PS: To all those thinking that: Im posting due to seeing gasbag's footer saying he'd leave once his post count reaches 1985, not because of shoe's/flasher's bans.

Yeh but I'm not really one of the well known members so if I leave I'm sure it won't make a great difference :P

The words: Does it matter?

I've been here three and half years, nothing core has changed. What I mean by that is, Flash had it's boom, it's time, but now Flash isn't the staple of web design it once was. Meaning, the flow of new members will gradually go down.

Over the past years, people have gotten banned and people have left. People have complained over the fairness of this board, but if someone were to go to your site and be a person of which would be banned, do you think it would be fair to you (the webmaster) to let that person stay at your site?

And I don't understand the purpose of people saying they are "leaving." This is a site for God's sake, it's not like they're dying the day after they post. Come and go as you damn well please, you aren't forced to come here and you aren't forced to stay away (most of the time). Everyone will get bored of Flashkit after awhile. I did. I didn't come here for quite some time once, but did I say I was leaving? No, because it's not a big deal anymore if someone leaves, Flashkit has been around long enough and has had enough devotees that people deserve to spend a little time away from it.

So there it is, my profound yet confusing comment of the day.

I'm only leaving because FK is boring these days, nothing here interests me anymore. FK was interesting when I was learning Flash but now I've learnt all I needed to and any further questions I have, have more than likely been answered already.
I will still lurk the cool sites board, but there is no use in posting anymore.

Things do change and the most important factor in deciding how this community functions, and the atmosphere is how people act. Mods can 'enforce' the standards set by the administrators of the site (no porn, etc) and considering the amount of free time most of us put into the site we also won't stand for people deliberately wasting our, and others', time and energy. Some people want to take from the community without giving back to it, why should those people be tolerated any longer than necessary? Most of the people who are banned because of their actions either do so after asking for it directly, or after many warnings and second chances.

Whatever this board is it's not a playground, and we're not here to babysit members. It's not that hard to have a laugh and relax without acting like a petulant 5 year old, without insulting other members, without wasting people's time, without creating the kind of impression that sends new members fleeing - people who might potentially have contributed more to FK.

Flashkit is fairly strictly moderated, but only within the guidelines you agree to when you sign up here. None of the mods want to ban people, none of them want go through the hassle of dealing with and banning members who are deliberately wasting people's time and spoiling the experience for others, the less noisy majority. We'd much rather get on with being a member at flashkit, the whole reason we joined in the first place.

In the end the people with the most influence over the way this community runs and feels is the members.



Having said all that there is talk about what we can do to improve things around here for members, and anyone wishing to contribute any thoughts or ideas about the board and the site as a whole should contact a mod or mr starkey himself.

Do I have to say free snacks and drinks again?

I think it's highly premature to be calling the county coroner to take away Fk's corpse just now. More likely than it grinding to a halt due to lack of membership use, internet.com will pull the site due to it's immense running costs.

Anyway, if there were to be a mass exodus of members, I imagine that the hardcore remainders would have a pretty decent time. Saying that, there's certainly some dead wood around here that could use trimming.

Also, although it's great to have a half million members (almost) listed on the index page, I really think that if someone registers and then doesn't access the site for a year or so, they should be wiped from the membership.

Look at the top 50 posters list http://www.flashkit.com/board/member...ers&perpage=50 and you'll always see a few names you haven't seen for a while, like Aria, jezza and RazoRmedia.

Yes, it's been a fun time. A great time, a matter of fact. Will I miss it? Sure. But we all move on to something different.

Okay. I've explained TIME AND TIME AGAIN that those were not leaving threads. They were temporary leave. I said in my thread I would stop back time to time, and in a little bit, might get back to steady posting. A couple weeks later (as I had projected) I'm up to par with what I expected.

My post count is less than 200 and i've been here for just under 4 years, i have month phases, more than likely when i use flash, this is one of those sites where i come and go.. :o

Simply wanted to get the newest going ons at flashkit, and to let people know I was back (obviously, not that you care).

I've been here for over 3 years. I have to say, back in the day this place was a lot more fun.

A lot more grown up, at least. But hey, i've made some good friends from here, and i'm sure i'll keep in touch with them.

And fruity, I agree with you. I cannot understand why people have to tell us they're leaving. Unless you're going on death row or are going to commit suicide, chances are you'll post here again.

I happen to disagree, I do see some members leaving, but more and more I see older faces popping into the lounge, people with 2000 registered dates and small amounts of posts. I also saw xerxes posting here recently. I don't think FK is all "new school" quite yet....

Just an FYI, the main site's page views leveled off a year ago and hasn't really changed. The board page views has tapered a bit.

IMO, since Nov 2001 when I first stumbled on the FK board, there's a lot more petty *****ing and griping among members. Less community. Do I have to buy a few kegs to get us all out of ***** mode? Even this thread , one about why the board has slowed down, has resorted to cat fights.

What do you feel we/me/mods/Jupiter can do to make the board a happier more welcoming place? We have the same amount of visitors, just less visiting the board.

hey a few of us old FK Geasers still leark around we might not be well known to all the knew kids that come on these boards but the older guys im pretty sure remember us.

I'm pretty tired, past my bedtime, but based on the first few posts, FK is getting less and less members who are able bodied. I know oldnewbie is leaving when he hits 11,000. Arrgh.

Gerbs posts in the 3D forums sometimes...but most of his posts come from the days when CL's post counts were recorded. Same story goes for quite a bit of members here as well...if you look at the top 50 posters, most of their post counts have barely moved since that cold winter of '02, at the dawn of the FlashKit revolution.

I don't know what the stats are, nor do I really care, but the Coffee Lounge has definitley died down. But does that mean "Flashkit" is coming to the end? The CL is not the end all be all of Flashkit. So maybe for a lot of us that don't post anywhere else on the board, then yea...maybe "flashkit" is going downhill.

Personally, I haven't used Flash in over a year, so i really have no motivation to visit the other boards. I basically just waste bandwidth from time to time in the CL.

I specified somewhere in my first post in this thread that I meant the FK CL, not FK in general. I post in the games division, and other parts quite a bit.

fospher, you're wrong. when I hit 10k, 78% of my posts were still outside of the CL. Mostly Swift3D, 3D, Plasma posts what got me up there. Now, the Arena has me posting... it's basically where I got my last 1k.

oh, and the "end of flashkit"? no way. a slow down is most likely attributed to everybody catching up with the technology.

the recent switch from 5 to MX then to MX 2004 was rather radical in that it forced artists to become developers.

Not exactly a bad thing, but a hard learning curve to overcome.
