You defiantly need a preloader, took 30 seconds for me on 756kbps.
Yep. Still working on it. It's a body jewellery page from our new site. It doesn't make much sense because you haven't gone through the site to get to it.
Preloader is on its way today.

yeah, loading took a little bit, even on a T1.
however, seeing a pic of Jesus on a body jewelry site was worth the wait.
Added the preloader today. The file size is about 300Kb, the images of the jewellery load in from external swf files.
Next I'll make the transition between preloader and scene, not today tho 'cos i had a massive lie-in this morning.

It's a range of navel jewellery (belly button piercing) with pictures on the front. This is a way of advertising the jewellery.
It's the first page that the 2 of us have designed together. There is also a printed version that will be in lots of tattoo magazines next month. The idea being that you see the advert, then see an interactive version of the same ad when you go online.
So it's not obvious that the grid is made of buttons. Okay, i'll add a little something at the beginning to make it obvious.
Did you find the product description text okay? It's small in the bottom left of the screen, below the grid. When you mouse over it enlarges so you can read it. I'd love to link it straight into the webshop but the one we use sucks.
You want higher res images? Do you mean the ones on the jewellery itself or in the background?
Better get on with some work i guess. Thanks for all the comments. Hopefully we'll be making a whole lot more pages like this from our enormous backlog of printed adverts. Before that tho we're gonna make a completely badass navigation system to link them all together.

i like the design- looks cool :)
loaded very quick on my computer- about 3 seconds. so no problems there.
i agree you could do with higher res images (on the jewellery).
also i didn't realise the text enlarged when you did mouse over until i read your comment- i was going to say it's far too small!! i like the idea, but i don't think it's obvious that you need to put the mouse over it (that might just be me though).
also i think maybe some kind of scroll (previous, next) would be good when viewing the jewellery as i found it a bit of a pain to keep having to look back to the little grid and move the mouse onto the next corner.
nice work though- i do like the design a lot :)
I cant say i like it. It looks very strange and i find it way too messy and its absolutely not clear what this thing is about.
Some pics seems ok, some pics seem to have a low quality.
And what is that square grid.? It seems to be one of the only things you can click, but what it does is not obvious to me.
Personally i dont really think you can call it a website, its more like some strange test effect or something.

It doesn't make sense because you are viewing it completely out of context. Imagine you buy body jewellery, you go to the body jewellery site, browse for navel bananabells and hit a link for picturebells. Then you see that advert.

Cool site, i dig the video clips fading out of vecor work. Not really into the whole 'mac' white vector thing, but whatever floats your boat. The text is too small to read on my monitor but other than that it looks okay.

I've increased the resolution on those images, turned out i'd angled the movieclip slightly to slot it in place. I turned all the png files slightly so the embedded movie clip is straight. Makes all the difference.
I've also added a 'slideshow' option, thanks carly.
There's also now a product code header for the jewellery and a link to wildcat.

Well it feels better already, only i think the logo and the text under that grid make it look jaggy and messy. Those pictures could be a bit more sharp, because the other pictures(e.g in the intro) arent that jaggy at all, they are rather sharp.

i just went back to the page( i kept it open a while) and then it looks quite sharp, so i think the movement of the pic and when they slowely come to a stop make it look jaggy and messy at first.
But i gotta admit that after they are completely still they are sharp and look very good.

I think they might be coming to rest (at _alpha=100) for too long, that action should cut off but you are right that the cut off is set too high. I'll reduce it and that should stop the problem.
Second thoughts, it might be something to do with the Auto High quality setting in flash????
It's so hard to test for stuff like that locally because everything just loads in.
I agree about the stuff below the picturebells logo being too jaggedy. The original graphic was A4 size for print. The grid and text weren't there.
I'm really happy with that big 3d render of the jewellery, took forever to get the lighting and material looking good.

Do you know any clever ways of testing locally for things like loading in swf files with preloaders. I use the bandwidth profiler but i'm sure there are other things. It's a nightmare tho cos every change i make I have to upload to the server then download again to see if it works. Also I often have to go into mt temporary internet folder to delete cached files.
That 3d stuff's wicked. I've been doing a lot of it recently. There are 2 graphic designers here. I do the 3d and my mate paints over it in photoshop. I love the output.

just looked at the code for those lenses that load in:

What a muppet i am... They never reach _alpha=100 so they never stop loading... doh.
Change to:

edit: Well since i'm such a dingus I've got each of those 49 little lenses fading in when they load. So each one has that bit of code above within it.
So i'm gonna have to change 49 swf files. So my question is. How do I load the lens movie into the main swf file and attached code within it??? I've never figured it, I suck with functions.
Okay, so i've updated the lens movies so they stop loading once they get to _alpha=100;
However, if you've already looked at the site then the files are probably cached and you might just get the older files loading instead of the new ones. I dunno.
But that really is it, at last. Joe (the artist) has come up with another wicked badass advert, so i'm gonna get to work on that one next. It's so nice to have time to work on flash again. Hardly done any in the last year. Feel like that little project has made me less rusty.

I always keep my code on the main timeline and will control the movie from there. That way i exactly know what code is where and where it should go.

I only just recently started putting all my code up in the timeline. I always used to make lots of little counters and loops but now i'm moving towards using the timeline as the counter and then just loop bits of it. Seems like a really good way to work.
Flash just seems to have a million and one ways to do the same thing. I've spent the past few years learning flash on and off and my actionscript is getting okay. I still only really do aesthetic things with it, nothing particularly clever. I just enjoy adding a bit of physics to a bit of art and playing with the result. I learnt almost everything off of the original praystation site. Then I found this place a few years back and learnt loads from the tutorials. Lost my origianl login tho.
I run a php nuke forum, i know almost nothing about php. I really wanna learn how to integrate flash and php but i just don't know where to begin.
Anywho. On with more of the same.

deamothul, that is the only php to flash tutorial i have ever managed to complete!! It's excellent. I now have phpdev running on my laptop, which means i can finally get to understand what's going on with a php file :)
