Then again, Adobe DID change the way things are coded in Acrobat 7.0 messing up the PDF Xtra for Director (and other such applications), so not only can you not tell the PDF document to print, zoom, etc via coding but it won't even display the PDF document.

Hmmm, interesting, and quite surprising news.
There are positives to this, as it'll put an end to silly patent battles between the two companies which ended up being to the detriment of the whole design community. We may well see the return of tabbed palettes in MM software. Macromedia are also set to add some photoshop-like effects to flash, so this might be a continued area of improvement, as it's no longer going to be a rivalry issue.
You can forget about livemotion, as adobe have already given up on this one.
What will be interesting is what will happen to illustrator/freehand and golive/dreamweaver. They're directly competing products, all with a large user base. I can't imagine that adobe will instigate any drastic changes here for some while.

this is very bad news! not that im against adobe, but Photoshop sucks compared to fireworks! what if they turn Flash into an impossible-to-use program like ImageReady??
what if they dont make new versions of Macromedia Central???
Macromedia is the best damn company ever and now everythings going to be turned into Adobe Flash MX???
i m using macromedia studio mx in office, i m quite afraid if any macromedia product taht i use currently become obsolete :o. (or i am overreacting here)

LOL funny how many people are scared of whats going to happen. Things like this happen all the time. Companys buy Companys.Why would adobe want to change a good thing like flash and director and dream weaver?
I think they have the same project leaders on board from macromedia.
So i think it will still stay the same. With a few minor changes to design. But i think the path the products were going in will still be followed in the next releases.
Umm hmmm. I think its the other way around, i think their is a few more users of adobe photoshop then fireworks. I would choose photoshop 50:1 over fireworks. But guess something like that comes down to preference.Quote:

Anyway all this being said i want to see what ends up happening to the products. 3.4 billion is alot of money to spend to screw up. So i dont think they have any intensions of stuffing up macromedia's product rep :)
You cant compare Photoshop and Fireworks directly as they are meant for different purposes. Which one suits you better depends what kind of image manipulation you need to do and how to publish the works. Fireworks is more competitor to ImageReady (if that still exists).Quote:

Yeh you got me. I know fireworks is better for slicing up images and exporting them as premade site's and table's. Image works is bundled with photoshop. Not sure if it is in all cases though. What i mean by choosing it 50:1 is for image creation. Thats why what i thought jesserules was comparing both.
well ImageReady SAYS it can do all those things, but that doesn't seem to work for me...also, i really like Premiere and After Effects. and why the hell does Adobe want to buy Macromedia??
Here's the difference:
Adobe is for Printing in magazines, and on TV.
Macromedia is for internet graphics, games, and tutorials.
Looks like Adobe wants to be the Microsoft of the graphics world.

I don't know which way to lean on this. I'm thinking that with the market belonging to Adobe, the competition will slowly decrease and then it will be an Adobe driven market (well more so than it is now). This could lead to problems in quality.
There will be no benchmarking against other companies to improve and out-do the other companies. This will mean that they are setting goals only inside their company, and are not as desperate to improve as they would have been before With one big company, Adobe can change the way everything is done on the web.
But I doubt Adobe will change MM's products much - since MM has got a very good reputation. They wouldn't want to change that. Perhaps enhance it with a bit of eye-candy and features, but I don't think they would screw up the $3.4 billion deal quite that easily.

On a negative note Adobe seem increasingly obsessed with do-everything, integrated suites so this looks like bad news. I kind of think that takes the fun out of development - afterall rarely do I reach for my 28-all-in-one swiss army knife when what I really need is a screwdriver.
On a positive note Flash has changed hands before - and look how it evolved ...
