On Macs, it's a whole different story.
Firefox tends to be able to run Flash stuff faster than Safari.
I used Invasion 5 (WIP) to benchmark it. Safari got a consistent 25 fps (or 24.5 to 25 if you want to be pedantic), not dropping no matter how many units were on the battlefield. Firefox fell between around 23 to 31, jumping up and down like crazy (generally getting faster as I added more units, no idea what's up with that), but on average reaching higher speeds. But the moral of the story is that Firefox actually managed to reach the intended framerate of 31 fps every so often, whereas Safari stubbornly refused stood its ground at 25.
In the standalone player, I get the full 31 fps.

I have been testing just basic timeline animations in flash. Nothing that special, some bitmaps, some text and vectors graphics animating on the stage. Similar to what anyone would do with a banner ad.
In flash, set at 30fps, I find in IE and FF the framerate drops to 24fps or so. However, that exact same movie set at 45fps will play at 32fps in IE and in FF. How in the world does the same movie manage to play at 32fps smooth - YET - when we set the FLA to 30 fps the movie cannot keep up that speed?
This is the bane of Flash development.
Currently I have been setting my movies to 45fps and I have a onFrameEvent that locks up the movie. It has it's pains as well. Maybe too many pains.
