well a few suggestions

(1) Come to forums and try to answer any questions you can. This way you come across problems you may not normally come across during your own projects.

(2) practice, practice, practice... (answering questions in forums will also help u do this)

(3) Build a solid foundation - buy a few good flash foundation books and keep on updating your skills all the time...do tutorials etc some people learn better with video... you can find some good video tutorials at www.lynda.com

(4) always keep asking questions

(5) you must really enjoy what you do , to really become proficient in something it should feel like a hobby rather than 'work'

I agree %100 silent. You gotta love it even when you hate it.
Give up on the idea that you're going to eventually get a grip by learning bits and pieces. It's not about memorizing a script here or a script there, it's about understanding the fundamentals.
Get Colin Moock's book
It's a big book but the second half is just quick reference for what you learn in the first half.
