used to like flash coz you could create games as a one man band, same as in the old 8/16 bit days. still can of course but its getting less easy to do that and compete with the professional agencies.
doing it for a living though really does kill the passion.

I've been sitting at home these last 3 days with every intention of starting on something new but I've just been watching endless crash compilations on youtube and drawing rude pictures on facebook. I feel like such a loser. Just can't face using flash at home, it's definately just a work thing now. bum
It's weird you feel like that ( I remember us chatting over a few skive funded drinks and you saying you just can't get anything done at home ), since leaving preloaded and doing the freelance thing I've found my love of Flash again.
I do find it very painful that I've got so many ideas queued up and clienty work kinda gets in the way of that, but I've been lucky and had about 50% projects where I have a real say, and 50% "just build it bitc'h" projects ( Although I'm treating work like that as a break, not having to have any creative input at all makes for a nice change from being Mr. Anal Control Freak ).

I'm in exactly the same boat too, the worst thing is I have one or two ideas which would totally pwn anything I do at work. I'm really gonna have to take some time off, not open flash for a couple of weeks and then get stuck in.

I am striving for the day when I am faster at all this. For when I can take an idea in my head and get it into code within a day for at least a proof of concept.
Strike that. What I would REALLY love is to make even a little bit of money, enough to afford a nice license to some socket server software so I can properly make a multiplayer game without polling to a sometimes non-responsive site and having most games end in link death. Also, increase traffic on our site enough so that my wife can afford to keep working on HER passions.
Is this really the dreamjob for most of you?,- what I read here sounds more like a hobby,- something for your personal desire and not for the client one. What would you guys do if for example adobe suddenly got buyed from microsoft or flash simply isnīt available anymore because of some patent war. Would you still stick into web- development or find something else?
If flash ceased to exist, the void would be VERY quickly filled by SOMETHING. I would either move to that something or onto C++. I did all the book reading and concept stuff for C++ twice now, but never did much programming in it. Mostly because I really hated most of the development software for C++. I kept trying that MS studio stuff and it was so much work to get a project started. The work environment seemed to take just as much to learn as the language.
I probably would move to another game development tool, maybe to make games for MAC users, or another way to bring games to the net
I always dreamed to make also an imaginary league of sports for the web, those games that take place in the server, just playing with variables
I think there are too many ways to make games or fun stuff

I am 69 years old. I am having problems of neck pain, giddiness, and hypertension. Still, I work 10 hours a day on my computer, in spite of doctor's advice and my wife's cursing.
Making games the way I wanted, how I wanted would be close to my dream job. Making them for dumb agencies isn't. If flash ceased to exist I'm not sure what I would do (aside from getting evicted).
Talking about dumb agencies, are you too both across the road at the moment? (lesli_felix & mentuat) If so you want to go shoot some pool tomorrow/thursday?
If flash ceased to exist, I'd be up and running with silverlight and c# asap. I'm considering doing so anyway to give myself more options.

if flash ceased to exist tomorrow I'd laugh hysterically, shake everyones hand and leave london as soon as possible. I have such a weirdly quiet but deep hatred and cynism for this industry but am too lazy and greedy to do anything else more worthy so I have only myself to blame

I do it because I am addicted, have been since around 12 Id say, computers and painting/drawing are all I want to do and all I ever do, I have not worked a normal job for 10 years, I am 100% self supportive, and find money to be a burden. Have it my way I would never leave my office, and die alone amongst piles of code and art. Flash has given me a whole new outlook on both, before flash it was only art, painting and drawing and engraving.
Now I have a new passion and thats web based programming.
I took a job once a few months back at FH a desing and animation firm, though the money was good, I left, I do what I want when I want, if I have to drive a 97 avenger and live in a duplex for the rest of my life, Im fine with because everyday I wake up Im happy to do what I am doing.
I am a jack-of-all-trades and a master of none. Presently I am working on FLASH. I think I am suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder, which is increasing with my age, a self inflicted mental torture. Well, I love it and don't want to change.Quote:
