back on topic: I didn't even know they were still making director. I guess it looks ok for the people that are used to it, but i'm still stickin with flash.

Much like silverlight, unity's hidden power comes from it's c# support. That potentially makes it faster than java, lingo and as3.
c# and mac-only? I hope their investors like losing money....
yeah, it doesn't make sense. 80-90% of this board are windows developers and look at the game scene too.
I guess it's mac 'cause that was the platform they code for anyway, plus it looks quite a designy kind of package.
I imagine the workflow would be the lead designer(s) on the mac and the coders on windows droping the code into subversion or the like for publishing.
( Yeah not great, but I'm just trying to see how it would work in a game studio ).

yeah I too was well disappointed with the new version of Director - was hoping it would inspire me to learn the 3D side of things.
They have posted a game demo made with Director 11 here which is a downloadable game at the moment, a shockwave version which will be available soon.

There have been inprovements in the 3D with the addition of a physics engine..
To quote someone from Adobe..."Physics based raycasting that is orders of magnitude faster - some would say 'lightening fast'. Also terrain maps, 6dof joints, and concave collisions that are smooth like buttah."
If only they would make the shockwave plugin less hassle for people to download!!
Im wondering.. is it possible that Unity would run in a pc with Mac-OSX installed? it doesnt seem that farfetched.
Oh yeah about Director 11... er... good for you. but seriously director hasnt been updated in ages (the latest version I saw still didnt had undo ) and to be honest there are far better products right now. (even popcap and cartoon network stop using it after a while)
Director may have made some sense back when we only had AS2.0 it was slow and it was restricted to web apps, but now that we have apollo, zinc and AS 3.0 is almost as fast as java, what exactly do we need it for?
Also $999.00 for director when CS3 is $600 and the update is $200 plus there are Open based options that are basically free? er... good luck with that.
No offense but adobe should consider making a 3d version of flash (a la unity) instead of beating the director dead horse, just saying.
adobe should perhaps consider closing the director development at all and instead write something from scratch.
Not sure if it was pointed out here but director 11 does not support AS3 coommunication at this point!- instead they say something like updating it in near future.

many of the new features are things flash had already several versions ago, like:
- Unicode support
- Enhanced text rendering engine
- Enhanced user interface
- Bitmap filters
- Stage docking
- Movie-in-a-Window docking
- Start page (who wants this anyway)
- XML parsing
I guess the final question is if it will survive with this- when their next version will be sceduled and if they consider creating certain aspects completely new- like the linear timeline concept, the rendering engine, the xtra plugin concept, ect.
I also recently found Unity and got pretty excited after reading up on it, only to be let down upon realizing it only runs on Macs... what the hell were they thinking?

ageia physx support is nice and so are some other improvements of the new director but i agree with the sentiments of most others in this thread, i think this is really too little, too late, regarding coming out with a new director version after such a long time.
the tool and workflow are way outdated on so many ends and the plugin has so severe stability issues on so many systems that yeah, anything else than a major rewrite would have been a disappointment in my eyes, and yeah, seeing how few additions there are, i´m not sure if that will make many jump onto director or stick with director if they used it before.
Overall as others pointed out there are several other technologies which seem way more capable and up to date on more ends.
Also the pricing seems kinda unrealistic to me. I mean sure, for an established studio that kicks out project after project 999 bucks (or the way cheaper upgrade price) doesn´t matter, but with director having such a diminishing market share i think they´d do way better by going for a super low fight price for the full version so that its attractive for anyone thinking about making the jump over to it.
Hello Adobe, just in case you haven´t heard, MS just announced that they make most of their pro tools available for free to students, just as food for thought..
I dont know how true is this, but their excuse is that they didint have that much time, Macromedia was doing nothing with Director and it was Adobe who decided to keep it going
if true then its a reasonable excuse, doesn´t help with the actual problem though, director just seems pretty outdated and overpriced compared to other things.
well, at least that statement by them could give one hope that one could expect more progress with the next version (if enough people buy this and there is actually a next version of director).

For those moaning "where's 3d support in flash?" there's been an update to Director with a pretty impressive list of enhanced features. The Shockwave player isn't dead yet...
