To develop your style which will be recognizable by everyone/or most of the crowd. But most important is being respected. Like many have already said, communicate with the audience, reach out to them...Stand out of the crowd with your individuality and uniqueness, think different... Successful designer is the one who is able to touch people's hearts/trigger emotions/hypnotize their minds with his/her art.
(maybe I'm too philosophical, but that's my interpretation of being successful).

My "goal" though rarely achieved, is to design something that says WOW! To make someone "think" and absorb their attention. To take them completely into the design. Kind of like being so far back in the country that you hear no cars, planes, trains, phones, kids, etc. so the mind can actually hear itself again. It is a rare occasion to hear your mind speak in these days of hustle and bustle.Quote:

A great design I believe will take a person out of their usual surroundings and into the page, enveloping them like snorkling in the Bahamas, oblivious to the world at land.
On the same token the water should be refreshing and crystal clear so the experience leaves a long impact on the senses, as just the memory of the design will take them momentarily out of the dulldroms of everyday surfing... I guess that would be my summation...have people snorkel your site instead of surf, Breezy.

My studio makes labels for a major export company which exports food at the States.
So we create very good (in my opinion) labels for what we think is Greece and meditteanen food. But the goal is to "translate" the opinion of the american consumer into a design. In the end we create labels in a different "language" with no serious meanings to us natives.
What I'm trying to say is that very few symbols have the same meaning in different cultures (one is CocaCola I'm sure). The point is how to make a universal language through design in a global media like the Internet.
I think it's a good oportunity to create a completely different language that has no bariers, except the dimensions of the monitor.
So how about peak a subject (no matter what, let's say a color) and try each one of us to translate it into design, through the personal and ethnic culture?
And maybe we can make an exibition in Flashkit with our work. No competitions and **** like that. Just to expose an universal point of view to the same thing.

Well, well! A good design is an idea that can travel from your imagination into someone else's awareness, in such a way that the orginal intention is preserved. Good design is
a means to translate your values to people around you. it's your effort as a communicator to make the world a better place for everyone. If you blur your design your intentions ar lost and your design sucks and you won't get laid ... or paid ... sucker.

I have been in the design world for about mm... 4 months??? yes i think so. And i have a little story to tell.
Once upon a time there was a girl...Ok i was the girl and i loved to write, i spent all of my days writing poems that my mother tore after. I wanted to become a writer but i could not spell good Spanish although is my lenguage.
Anyway, i had never seen photoshop or illustrator in all of my life and one day in my husband's office ( he has his own company) i realize i wanted to do something that i could be proud of, something that made up for the wrtiting, something i could take pride in doing, something that not only i like but for what i had passion. I had all the programs, i had the people to help me since the company shares it's office with webmaster. I open photoshop and illustrator and begun.
It goes like this, four months after i have built 4 websites and i have been paid 2000 dollars already (just learning)
So what is the goal of a designer ( if i am one) i believe it's the beauty behind it, the effort that you put into something and see it. My goal for example is to become so dam good that i will work for a great company and my designs will be wanted by everyone. I believe that is the goal of every designer, becoming someone big, been admire for your work, walk into a room and see that people know they are in good hands with you.
Been demanded. The goal of any designer is the goal of anyone who wants to make career, they want to get big, to get high.
That is my goal, i love designing websites, is what i want ( for printing i don't know still) i must tell everyone i past a exam in photoshop 5.5 dreamweaver 3 after four months and now i am certifed.
ONE THING: you must want it real bad, so bad that it hurts, so bad that you stay up until five in ther morning and still don't want to go to bed, so bad that you're obssesed.
iam 23 and i have learned one thing " the year has 365 days, if one little thing is learned each day, at the end of a year one has learned 365 little things and at the end of five year one has learned 1825 little things making it a huge learning in a 3.2% of aprox 70 of life time"

The reason I try my best to make a good website is to get recognized. I want to be recognized because when people ask my clients who did their awesome site, I want them to spread the word of my magical workings... ... ... and in the end I get jobs, and jobs == money.
