No, this is Flash MX only. In Flash 5, the only way that you can determine width is to build an array of character widths and then add it up. It's certainly not pretty.

You can get the dimensions of a textbox by accessing its textWidth and textHeight properties.
If that doesn't work the way you expect, set the autoSize property to true and try again.
