i'm mainly familiar w/ lightwave, so you'll have to talk w/ other users to get an overall opinion of each app. as far as lightwave goes, IMHO, it's the best all-around 3D package straight...

sorry if you misunderstood, Mole_Incarnate. "the Tao of Design" isn't a book (that i know of, at least)...it's just understanding the visual flow of imagry & information and translating it ontosome...
