i don't know if it's because people think all the "smart" flash users come to the "boardroom" and they'll get a better answer to their technical questions or what -- but i'm kinda getting tired of wading through the "tell me how to do something" posts.
anyone have solutions to this?

Yes, I do. Make it so you have to be at least a "member" before you can post in here. That would stop about 90% of them. I know it sounds kind of harsh, but I think it would work.

Agreed!
We've just today changed the description in the 'announcement' thread at the top (Boardroom Guidelines) to emphasize the fact that this isn't where you'll get tech help.
We are cconstantly closing and moving help threads.
And, we have a few "Don't post help" threads that we push to the top from time to time.
If ppl would just take the time to read these instructions before posting here, it would be nice.
<facetious>If they would take the time to read the instructions elsewhere, many times they would need to even ask for help anywhere.</facetious>

What? I skipped from new member right to senior member. Guess I'm pretty cool huh?
Please don't demote me.

I agree with keeping it open only to Members. Is it possible to actually not allow people under a certain number of posts to reply to or create a thread?
If so, this would be great. I understand that many "newbies" to the boards are actually very successful business owners/freelancers, but there has to be a cutoff somewhere.
-
yes i like that idea... not to ostricize or alienate people, but just to know that people posting here have "gotten their hands dirty" already, so to speak.
members only would be a start to this.

Maybe here is another idea...
Close the forum off to posts except for to those who have specifically "applied" for it. In the application, they agree to post only content that fits the forum. If they break the rule, they are removed form the privileged list.
I, personally, value this boardroom enough to the end that I would never violate the rule. I'm sure others do as well.
The posts would still be read only to everyone else, thus giving it an appeal to those who are not "members" of it yet.
Just a thought

I was going to suggest changing the header text for the Boardroom awhile ago, but I figured it was already under advisement.
So, as a new suggestion why don't you move it completely away from the the coffee lounge and flash area, and slip it in below in the support section, if you make it less accessible it will not get all the traffic.

that's a good idea roguenroll -- moving it way down on the list.

Hi......I agree, aa and roguenroll........actually, I suggested that a while back......

There didn't seem to be much enthusiasm for that suggestion then
I still think it would help.....
Take care,

1 - You couldnt possibly restrict the boardroom to people with a certain amount of posts. Some people have huge contributions to this site, who have been registred forever and who are still on member status. Yes they would qualify to come here if new members were not allowed, but FK would in fact be stereotyping new members by their title.
2 - Every forum has posts posted inside them every day that should not be there, that probably wont end unless something major has been done. Yes attempts at this have been made by changing the announcement info, but as always there are people who will post anyway without a care.
The are some good suggestions but its always a problem changing a system significantly. Maybe a popup informing users not to post whatever they shouldnt post before they enter might work.
Jelve, are there any other plans to change the way it works other than the description in the announcement at the top?
-
why not put a short pop-up on the page?
-
whoops did'nt read the last post...
people dont read the guidelines... they want an answer quick.

I think the boardroom gets 10x or 20x the misplaced posts.
It really is a situation that needs extra attention.

Maybe a little annoying after a few visits. I doubt an option FK will implement.

Then I 2nd, Pigghosts original suggestion. Probably the view was that the people would realize not to post here.
Instead I think someone is sending out invitations. ha ha
Its a real problem now.

First off, everyone needs to realize that we moderators have far less power than is imagined. We can and do make suggestions to the admins and we often direct the attention of the admins to threads such as this one. However, we don't have the authority or technical level of administrative power to move entire forums or to institute popups or even to institute a policy blocking members without certain status. The very existence of this board was something that was suggested months before it actually came to be.
Our main role here is to keep the peace and to try to keep the forum on topic. keeping the peace, thankfully, is relatively easy in the Boardroom. Keeping on topic has obviously been less easy.
I am starting to be a bit more ruthless in my deleting and/or moving of misplaced posts. Perhaps by doing this more often, prople will get the message.
My best advice to keep the forum on topic is for more of us to start and participate in more threads that ARE on topic. If a newcomer looks in here and doesn't see any 'help' threads posted, they're more likely to get the right idea of what this forum is all about.
In the meantime, we'll continue to get in here once or twice a day and clear out the stuff that belongs elsewhere. I do appreciate the concern that all of you show in this matter and I also appreciate when some of you reply to those newbies and (politely) ask them to post in a different forum.
Hopefully, all of this is merely 'growing pains' on a fairly new board.

War is futile: just drink beer
There is a byworld when closing/moving these kind of threads...
Especially when closing, if the ppl posting are new members, it must be a bit frustrating to see how your 1rst or second thread is closed! However, by doing it with a cool reply, members can be re-directed to the correct forum.
IMHO, will get this kind of "how can I do X" threads. It happens the same in Coffee Lounge, maybe in a smaller percentage.
My latest policy with these threads is to post this:
This is a forum dedicated to discuss Design related issues. You will get much more feedback by posting in one of the help boards, like
General Help
Flash 5 General Help
Flash 4 ActionScript
Flash 5 ActionScript
etc...
Regards,
david
And then close the thread.
New members will find this help interesting and will learn that they cannot post wherever they want, while experienced ones will learn that Boardroom is dedicated to designing issues only...
I think the Board is catching on slowly. Anything new needs time, needs lots of ppl bookmarking the forum, etc etc... IMHO, it WILL catch cause it ROX!
Regards,
david

Sorry jelve.....you're right, I did assume you guys had a lot more power........(maybe you should)
....and you're probably right, it's just growing pains..........and time will take care of it.

True... I'll have to second PigGhost's comments.
Thanks, guys, for taking the time to moderate this board. It is always my first stop at Flashkit, and I thoroughly enjoy the insight of those who frequent it.

do what i do... ignore the post, or reply with a link to the forum guidelines thread. no need to block anyone. most people just post these tech questions not knowing that it's not the place to do so.
