I've created a FREEWARE conversion program called GIF2SWF.

This application lets you convert your animated or static GIF files to SWF (shockwave format). This allows you to optimize filesize while mantaining image quality (for use in Banners, Icons, Intros, etc.)

    Hi there,

I think they ask gif producers to obtain a license, not gif consumers.

The Unisys patent is in the LZW compression algorithm used inside GIFs.

You need a license to use the algorithm - which affects both the reading and writing of GIFs. So this GIF2SWF program is most likely infringing on the patent.

The legality of reading the format is not really clear but Unsiys does give away lzw to some non-profit orginizations and to individuals creating software that will not be sold for a profit.

Just to stir up trouble I would petition IBM for the rights for LZW becuase they happend to patent LZW a week before Unsiys and then get a good lawyer.

As far as using the software Unsiys is going after both the software makers and the users. They are charging users with contributary something or other- anyhow they are prosecuting both although It would be hard to prove that you did it.

Now a MNG to SWF converter- That would be nice and for sure legally in the clear.

    Hi there,

in another argument about gif format, it was pointed out that some legacy software was not affected, and that - among others - Jef Poskanzer's freeware image format conversion meets the legacy criteria. This could be taken to read that any freeware which includes his code verbatim or which links to his library also is exempt from restrictions. Just a thought...

    Hi daunis,

what about a linux (cmdline only) version of the tool?

@azzyt: swf2jpg was on this page of posts, or perhaps on previous one. There is not so much traffic in this forum...

    gif2swf, loops

Hi, I tried gif2swf. It is wonderful, but it seems that I have problems getting swf that should not be in endless loop. If I put option in code -l 1, I get 2 loops, and last pic dissapears. What I imagined it to be is 1loop, freeze last the image at the end. Is there any possibility for it, or should I consider another option?
    Thank you.
