for the newcomers
this is for those who aren't sure what this is all about.
quick info
- This will not noticably affect your computers performance as the program is set to low priority so it uses free cpu resources only
- There are prizes to be won!!
- download here
- join team flashkit here
- Team FK needs YOU
long info
this is a distrubiting computer effort much like seti@home that utilises the power of hundreds of thousands of computers around the world. All these computers are simutaniously searching for a cure for cancer to put it bluntly, by using the computer to simulate chemical reactions and send the results back. the results are analyzed, and if some are found to be good further research is conducted on that and eventually, this could lead to a drug that cures cancer.
You have to download a program with runs at low priority, so it only uses unused computer resources so you won't know it's active. or you can simply run it as a screensaver so it only runs when you're not using the computer. Every so often the program communicates with the saver to send/receive work units and keep going. The company, United Devices, will donate webmiles to the Starlight Childrens foundation based on the amount of work units completed, so there is another good cause of this program. If a cure is found, it won't be sold, it will be freely available. This project is supported by INTEL, the cancer society and Oxford University. You can win prizes, there are tens of thousands of dollars of prizes to be given away including flights, computer packages and cold hard cash.
CANCER FACT —
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the US, exceeded only by heart disease
there are teams, which compete against each other. we have a team, team flashkit. we have 29 members and have crunched 394 work units. check out page 1 of this thread to see a screenshot of the program.
this is a great cause, and a chance to prove that Flashkit kicks arse, let's show the other teams what we're made of even if you have a pentium 166 still sign up, it will make a difference!
so sign up now, and check out the website for more information.
find out more about the cancer research project here and here
once you have signed up
once you have signed up, it would be nice if you put a link in your footer to this thread, to encourage others to sign up. to do that, edit your profile and on your signature put this along anything else there, or change it to whatever you like...

And remember, your P166 could be the one that finds a cure. This is like "It takes millions of drops of water to make an ocean."

Thanks
Hey Hobbi,
I want to thank you for linking me to United Devices. My my Best Friend is dying of Cancer and I have been watching her suffer through the past year. I'm afraid she doesn't have much time left, she's had all the treatment and surgery her body can take.
It feels good to know now that I'm actually doing something to help. I'm even thinking of putting my current flash project on hold and start another dedicated to this worthy cause. I hope someday soon we will reign victorious!
Cheers to Team Flashkit!
