It means when an instance is declared and it has an extention something like this:

/words:letters

I wanna know what the ":letters" part is for. I've learnt a lot about actionscript from flashkit so I'm hoping (i know) you lot will know.

It's referring to the variable "letters" which is set and held withing the movie clip instance /words. It's just a way to access variables in a movie clip without requiring the use of Tell Target.
