How old would that be in years?
Congrats.
A good place to find cheap computers is on net auctions. (egghead.com or sometheing like that). They always have new stuff, and If you're lucky you can get it for less than 50% of the original retail price!

i know lanny would agree with me here, dell laptops rock.
i have a 15" 850 with 384 megs and a 32 meg video card. it's awesome, came with a dvd and a cd-rw!! I haven't had a problem with it and the contruction is solid.
there's a cheaper version (the 4100 i think) that has a 12.1" screen instead, that might be worth looking at.
i agree with the other guy though, this is a great time to find cheap stuff at auctions with all the dot coms going bust there's a lot of bankrupt office stock around...

I'm looking into buying a laptop at the end of the month and I think it's going to be Dell. Next to Apple, they seem to be the only ones that you can customize to such an extent (and ar readily available in Europe..)
They come out cheapest against whatever I compare it too (perhaps maybe the new Ibook, but I don't think that's fair competition - although it looks great, that apple comp..)
The Dells also seem to get really good reviews (from magazines and people I spoke who bought one...)
Here's some links to reviews I found helpfull..
Dell

There's loads more reviews on the net on Dell and other notebooks, do a search on google or browse through user opinions on http://www.cnet.com http://www.zdnet.com and http://www.epinions.com
Oh, and something everybody I spoke told me: get as little RAM as possible from the manufacturer and upgrade with ram from http://www.crucial.com - for Dell it's upto 1/5th of the price...

<RABID="APPLE LOVER POST">
One word:
iBook.
If you want, it can come with a DVD-ROM (can play DVD movies). Or a CD-RW drive. Or, if you're prepared to spend a couple hundred more, a CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo.
And it looks awesome, too.
http://www.apple.com/ibook/
Plus, now it comes with MacOS X pre-installed.
