i am a newbie at this and i am doing it because i think its fun

and i consider this training ground
and some people like mcchicken i guess just like to teach...
not everything is about profit
some people do things for fun
at least at first
to tell you the truth i don't know if we ever gonna make
a full game

when i first saw this i read the ... you seem to be a **** thinking you where about to start telling me that what i have done is crap, but this was not the case, few!
i dont consider myself that good at actionscript, ive not been using flash 5 that long, and ive only been using it more regularly for about 2 months. So its over this period that things have started to develope.
I just enjoy it, using all that stuff i was forced to learn for my maths and physics A-levels
I also enjoy helping people, if these where commercial projects i would think a little more carfully, but in most cases these are for fun. I like doing the little interesting action scripting problems in games, i often cant be bothered to finish my games, i only really enjoy the meat of the sripting (if you can say that in this relitively easy code of ours). After that i tend to get distracted by other things that capture my attencion.
Any way guys, if you have any more interesting little problems let me know, and ill try and help

i agree with DNAlogic, maplethorpes seems to be only "commanding" this project- and so far he has shown none of his own work. the movement system he has was from others help, and thats about the only thing he has had any involvement in. i would love to help with this project, but, like many other similar group created games, it isnt goin to well.
maplethorpes, could you post everything oyu've done? ive been viewing this thread for the past few days, and have found absolutely no inspiration for a contribution, mostly because i still dont have a clue what the f*k is goin on. maplethorpes, no offence but you have to get your ass into gear and do something. make some graphics (symbols) so we can make them do stuff, or provide some code and we will do the symbols. you cant possible expect your little helpers to do this when it is "your" game, and we dont really know what you want, or expect us to do.
you have only said, make a space background. yay, what a start to a game, a background.
plz, lets get this cool idea off the ground???

Here is the .fla to the basics of the game so far. There are some extra stuff in the library. I edited it up too so you shoould be able to tell. I added shotting(space bar) and then to move you click somewhere. I hope you forgive me. Here is the link now:

ok, thanks maplethorpes, the shooting is a big improvement. will this game be all action- or is it gonna be a sort of space trader game? if its the second one, i can do the trading simulator, from something neoski and i were working on ages ago.....

i don't really see how this game is gonna work
and i would like it to know
these are my suggestions
point and click only to go to different levels
after all a point and click game could be quite boring
each level will be a different swf possibly no more then 100kb (will see )
first level should be a side scroller ala mario but with some rpg elements like you can talk to people or something
second level flyng level scrolling vertically (like invaders)
in other words each level will have a different game perspective not necessaryly in the order i put it
and all connected by the rpg story line
which i gave it to mapple using of course the same space ship which will get upgrades and bonuses on each passing levels
this way each one of you will have it easy since you probably already have developed a kind of game engine
if you need to create ships robots or whatever i am here

Very good idea. I guess I never thought of it as having different types of controls or vechiles. Like the second level you could land on a planet and drive a little car or something. Then the third on foot. I will start designing the second levels look. Magnetos what you could do is make some enemy ships. The first level will be a side scroller. The second will be a vertical scroller( or so I think so far.) But if you could develope some enemy ships, and them blowing up, I can start putting it together. Thx.

I'll put level 2 on hold. For the enemies I would like it to look like the ship we have so far except ultered to look evil. Make it the same style as the other ship. I'll start working on some script on a dummy plane and then transfer it to the real ships(enemies). Thx and it seams like just you and me are working on this.

yeh, those gradient fills will be annoying for die hard 4 yr olds on crappy pcs. i prefer the simple, normal fill approach ( http://www.domesticchaos.f2s.com/mousegame.html )
but this game slows down anyway on most pc;s, coz of my crappy hitTest code.
anyway, the only reason that i replied at the moment was to ask if you guys wanted a simle website for this project. ive done a few designs in flash (never got any real content on them though) and i wouldnt mind trying my hand at a new idea for a design ive got. i could get you guys a simple free host (f2s.com).

personally i think that we should create a game aimed
for those who have dsl/cable fast connections and very fast
p3 or p4 cpu
or at least something so good that people would want to wait for long preloading
we gotta think big dudes !!

for the game website i would suggest to put the game
in a nice pop up window those look nice and very elegant
but i am thinking too far ahead...
let's concentrate on level 1 of the game for now
for the gradients i would say that if we don't put more then 10 ships on the screen at the same time the frame rate
shouldn t be so bad at least on a PIII based pc
if you guys have less than a PIII i suggest you update !!!
