    hi
all i want is a nice lighting effect in 3dmax, something that covers everything and maybe leaves a corner shaded, but all i get is stupid spotlights on one part of the image.
so i render it out and get parts showing up and other parts completely not there. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

try using several medium-weak omni lights and one omni light that casts shadows.

Otherwise the question is too broad.

    Might check...

Check the value of the multiplier field in the lights properties and make sure it is positive. If the value in the multiplier field is negative, you get a "negative" light, which means everything it lights will be dark.

    See if that helps...
