New to XML> help!

Hi, ive had a look at a few site looking at varios XML sites( Xml101.com ). i have also looked at the tutorial here, was very complex and seemed to do more than i needed.
I simply want to read in some data.

So, 1)what do i need to learn
2)what do i need use
3)and how do i get started

These are the questions i would like answering.
