Company says it owns hyperlinks patent
A British company claimed in federal court Monday that it owns the patent on hyperlinks -- the single-click conveniences that take a Web surfer from one Internet page to another -- and should get paid for their daily use by millions of people. Full Story....

Anyone remember that scene in the first Austin Powers where Dr. Evil talked about his dad? He said that his dad would make outrageous claims such as inventing the question mark. That's what this reminds me of.

I invented the keyboard! You will all pay me for its use or else I will press my little black button to disable keyboards around the world!

So? I invented the patent.

haha. That seems pretty silly. I remember way back when I was working at my old university. My boss said that the peeps that invented the "gif" format wanted to collect. Imagine how much money you could collect on an image format, especially gif. I actually think this law suit spawned the creation of the png. Not sure though.

I thought GORE invented the Internet... that means HE owns the patent on the hyperlink right?![/QUOTE]

Well beings as I own the patent, I can easily make you pay for for using my patent on your RAM.

well since this made thread of the week, i thought i'd put my 2 cents in.
This reminds me of the windshield wipers on cars law suit
(the timer quartz crystal thing)
. One company like Ford sued another huge one because one of them claimed to have the patent. Well this is ears after the 2nd one had been installing them and so there was a huge settlement since it would have meant recalling years of cars and models otherwise.

yeah I saw this last Friday. Did they created the <A></A> tag? Besides, they should have done this during the Dot Com Boom not during the Dot Gone Boom, what they want to double bankrupt every last struggling companies by making them pay a fee for patent rights? But still, they deserve to go to court and have the court give them a large some amount of money.. I mean the courts are doing that anyways, right?
I'm gonna sue everyone because I helped ]v[orpheus invent the RAM!

that's actually probably just another form of the popular urban legend that goes around in the united states and overflows overseas... you may have seen a similar claim involving a lady and mcdonald's, etc.
i wouldn't believe it until i saw an actual news article about it

The Mcdonalds woman is not an Urban Legend and here is a legal analysis of the case http://www.lectlaw.com/files/cur78.htm and a summary from consumer rights net http://www.consumerrights.net/mcdonalds.html
She actually recieved 160,000 in compensatoiry dammges and 2.7 Mil in punitive dammages. That makes the MC Coffee award 2.86 Mil.
The BT case is for real also- although they more than likely will not win. With anyluck the courts will see the folly of Software patents and make them all ilegal leaving copyright the means of protection for software- as it should be.
