Cloning pets? This could turn into a Steven King movie.
"Pet Cemetery The final hairball"
Starring: John Trovalta as the Mad doctor.
Bruce Willis as the voice of Bill the cat.

Its not really sick. Cloning and perfecting the Cloning process so that so many clones are not destroyed does have many uses. As they perfect the process the downsides of cloning will diminish. Not to mention that the research may be aplicable outside of pets as the Cat is something like 96% the same make up as a human. This is why in colloge A&P clases students are typically required to dissect a cat.
They could take the research methods they developed cloning kittens and improve upon it then use it to bring back animals that People have unwittingly or purposely driven to extinction or near extinction.
If it could be perfected it could also be key to populating teraformed planets, teraforming is another idea that is thought to be dangerous by some but researchers are working on theories and pratical methods.

Who would eat meat from an animal that is pumped full of growth hormones, steriods, antibiotics. The animal eats crops doused with pesticides and herbicides.

i'd rather eat meat from a cloned animal organically reared than a normal animal stuffed with chemicals... then again i'd rather have a marmite sandwich than eat meat any day.
