    Cool stuff Hovarth!

Interesting to see Flash being used through all stages of the Illustration like that, and I think the characters are cool! Handmade?

I might have to stop by Zakka here in NY and pick up some.

gnahhh!! Truly, I took one look at those dolls and choked up my green pea soup!! These dolls could make your dog whine and run under the bed. If you pulled them out of a shopping bad, babies would cry in a 30 meter radius. Keep them away from your boss---you don't want your boss to get ugly!

Actually, I thought they'd be more like the frog-pack thingys from your movie project, I like the design on those better, no so ugly---heh, heh!!

Still, it's cool they're selling and that Flash animation can get "in your face" in more ways than one...

The best part about all this was when I found out about what was said at Mattel toys this morning.

I know someone who works at Mattel, and he said everyone was ranting while huddled around an article about UGLYDOLL in the newspaper shouting " WHY CAN'T WE MAKE SOMETHING LIKE THIS!"

    =)

As I recall, Cabbage Patch dolls were called "ugly" when they first hit the market around 1982-83. A year later, people were busting chops to get them, no matter how ugly they were.

The next couple of years, I remember seeing a wave of "unique" dolls that ranged from straight Cabbage Patch rip-offs, to ultra-cutes, to monsters, to pug-ugly, to just plain bizarre.

Sometimes unlikely items just catch fire, it's not all that predictable.

Basically, if that guy at Mattel just checked his company's history books, he'd probably find a dozen sets of ugly dolls that were marketed in the last 20 years.

haha, i think thhe guy at mattel was refering to how we made them for no reason...

    they have no tv tie-in
    no fast food promo
no super hi fi corporate marketing and testing and all that stuff huge toy companies go through to ensure that thier toys will make millions of $$.

its just a cool (hopefully) thing that 2 people wanted to do and caught on.......i think he meant that mattel USED to do that too, back in the day...and htey miss that creative energy? i assume.

Im just having a lot of fun making them.=)

I think there are some marketing lessons to be learned here.

Would mind detailing how your GF got the ball rolling?

How many people did she approach about selling these?

You obviously had a hand in providing design and marketing umph with the Flash Animation. What kind of business arrangment do you have??

    Thanks.

What actions took you from "having fun" to making money? It's something I think many readers here would like to hear about...

    Thanks again for your help
