Hey, I was wondering why Flash didn't support MIDI files? it would be easy to incorporate a MIDI player inside the Standalone player, and then we could just put MIDI music in the files and not worry about filesize, because, you know, MIDI files are lightweight.
Of course, the sound output will depend on the user's amchine, and MIDI isn't good for voices etc., but sometimes it's all you need, when making a greeting card for instance...
Is there a technical reason why not MIDI in Flash?

why not ask Macromedia?
One issue is player size. Macromedia has to be judicious about features it adds to the player. They want to keep the player small as possible, which is probably the main reason for its success.
I wonder how large a code base a basic playback only sequencer would be?

Where to go?
Can you give me a link where I might ask this to Macromedia?
And what about MOD files? ever heard of them? they're like digitized MIDI. Very neat.
I'll try Macromedia.com...

there is a flash midi player!
I saw one yesterday while looking for new sound apps on flashkit.com. I'll try to find it again, but I am positive it is there. I remember thinking, wow that would be cool.
It was like a midi jukebox created 100% in flash.
hope this helps.

flash does not play midi files directly. you cannot import midi into the flash authoring app. To create a flash midi player there must be a 3rd party player to play the midi files.
the simplest approach is to use getURL action within Flash to load a midi file into a hidden frame or IFRAME in a web page and let the browser's default audio player play the midi, such as quicktime, windows Media, beatnik etc.

hmmm
sounds like you know more about flash than I do, so I am not going to argue.
Here's what I found on flashkit though....
still might not be what that other guy wanted.....

Paisano: the links you sent me were very interesting, but hp3 is right, they all use 3rd party software, or scripting. But thanks for taking the trouble of searching for me.
hp3: wish@macromedia.com does not exist. Were you joking?
-
no not joking just the wrong email address. sorry for the confusion.
there is an email address at MM that you can send feature requests to. Search around in the flash product area.
-
No probbie.
Okay, no problem. I'll take a look around the macromedia.com site.
Who knows, I might be able to convince them to squeeze it in the 6 version... (Yeah right)
