hey there y'all, I'm kind of new at the whole server/database score. I use Flash now and will obviously be making the jump to MX in a week or so. My question...I want to get into the "backend" deal.

What do you guys recommend to use with Flash. Cold Fusion or ASP or does it even matter, is one betta than the oda? What's da word hummingbird?

    Thanx 4 ur tym!

    ColdFusion

i'm learning ColdFusion... through research, it seemed to be the easiest to learn and its by Macromedia(Allaire). I've become fond of Macromedia's products/ease of use and intergration. Can't wait 'til ColdFusion MX

    I sujest you use PHP

May be you heard about PHP a free open source scripting language for the web, in many ways PHP is better than Cold fusion or ASP and if you look in the web you will find more tutorials for PHP with Flash than Cold Fusion or ASP ther is even a great book Fundation PHP for Flash. I recomend you this pages so you can get a glimpse of PHP:
    http://www.flash-db.com
    http://www.actionscript.org
http://www.phpforflash.com/board where you can find a board made with Flash and PHP and there is even a web mail made with Flash and PHP at.

ASP has one advatange, ColdFusion has another:

    - More people know ASP, it like more universal than ColdFusion, at least by now...
    - MM support ColdFusion way better than ASP...

Personally I would pick CF if I had to start from 0. If you deal easier with ASP, then -hey! go ahead!

I think that if you are looking to do a lot of flash / server integration in the future, you would not be disapointed by learning ColdFusion.

    CF vs ASP

well, i figured CF would probably work better cuz its from MM. Plus I had done some poking around on different forums and that seemed to be the consensus. However, the PHP thing threw me for a curve.

    Thanx again!

Learn coldfusion, it's relatively easy and whe Coldfusion MX will come out, you have the right base knowledge.

Just my opinion ... PHP is also really good!

    books

What book(s) do you guys recommend as far as teaching myself Cold Fusion? I was looking at the "Cold Fusion: Training From The Source" by MM. I used this line to learn Fireworks and Basic Flash and they were pretty cool cuz they have all the graphics and files needed to create a website with the app.

Are there any specific books yo guys suggest?

Thanks so much again for your time

By the way, PHP is supported by many more servers than the rest, is free from http://www.php.net or http://www.zend.com and can be learnt for free from http://www.devshed.com (I like php, did you guess?)

Get the newer version of IE now you idiot, ...
Hi Ed_Mack, could you change your footer so that it does not constantly try to load something - it probably does this only when viewed with netscape, but it is annoying

ColdFusion has not much to envy from PHP, and I think it is still the best bet around...
Besides ColdFusion has been around as long as -if not even longer than- ASP...

I would recommend ColdFusion, it's easier to learn, quicker to develop in, has far less code to debug, and offers a higher return on investment to over ASP.

Here's an interesting comparison of CF to other server side scripting languages, including PHP, ASP & JSP: http://www.macromedia.com/software/c...dfusion_wp.pdf

ColdFusion is older than ASP by at least a year.

For excellent books on CF I'd recommend anything by Ben Forta, the CF Guru, check out http://www.forta.com, there's also a very good book on CF from O'Reilly.

Musicman, that is my footer loading. I don't really know why netscape wont work, but it works fine in IE (The get IE now, is that from my website?).

What are you doing with Netscape anyway

    Hi Ed_Mack,

    it is _constantly_ loading users.php
If you are running on a PC, you can hardly get IE without accepting MS's their operating system as well - which reduces the available browsers to netscape (=mozilla), opera, mozilla, konqueror (=mozilla)

    Check For serverr support

In order to decide if you are going to learn any scripting language you must look that the hosting has it for example ASP, PHP, Cold Fusion, Zope, JSP etc. but many places don't provide some scripting languagges in their hosting. If you use ASP or PHP you will able to find more places where you host your swfs well. The interesting part is that with flash 6 there are going to be a lot of new applications because it can handle mp3 and images dynamically, so all web programers we will be able to improve look and content in new sites. There was Generator but it costs $$$$ to much.

Yeah, it is, though you are the only person who has complained ??

Its polling system, thats how it works. Anyway, why's it hurting you? (Not meaning to be cheaky or anything).

I suppose if it's really annoying, you could turn off flash footers.

Is there a similar comparison NOT compiled by Macromedia? I just had a look at the code examples.
The CF example just specifies a database name, while php code also names the database server and the database password. Unless CF only works with databases that are not protected somehow, and does not support dedicated database servers, these information datails have to be given somewhere - I'd count them as lines of code as well.
CF has integrated mime mailing capability and obviously leads in this example - the comparison between asp and php shows a call to an external program on one side and all the code required to do it inside php on the other side. What about counting the code lines necessary for calling html_mime_mail class.
I have no experience with CF, so I can only comment on the php / asp comparison. Code examples that show up in the forums, like talking to a database, typically require more lines for the asp than for the php. Could anybody contribute short examples that are more specific to flash: sending multiple results from a database query as flash variables, proxy scripting to a third-party server, handling xml content or even creating binary data (swf movies)
