    And there is the Rub...

Apple can't give away the education market becuase it is still a large part of the MAC market in general. Almost every college I have been to has had at least 1 Mac lab.

If you look at apple's site they have a program set up for education discounts.

Now Microsoft whose percentage of market from giveaways and donations of MS products to the Education market isn't really making them much cash in the grand scale of things. Microsoft doesn't need the Ed market. In fact a Private Anti-Trust Case Settlement between Consumers and MS in which 1 Billion US Dollars in MS products would have been donated to schools was found by the judge not to be in the best intrest of the public and was struk down. See MS could easily not make a dime or lose money in the Ed Market becuase it has 36 Billion in Cash Reserves. In fact MS is set to loose 1 Billion this year on XBox and isn't projected to make a dime off of XBox until 2005. When you have 36 Billion in Cash reserves you can do things like this.

As far as marketing things goes... Microsoft is so big now that a lot investment bankers will no longer give you money to compete against Microsoft. The Investment bankers and Wall Street in general does not believe that a company can stand agaionst MS so they do not give these companies money. Prime example is the Indreama project that would have competed directly against the XBox. The Indream had 6 prototypes and 30 Games in developement or near realase when they had to cancel, and all the polls showed that those polled were slightly more likely to purchase an Indreama Console over an XBox, but the project was shut down due to lack of funds anyhow becuase Investors refused to inveat in the company becuase it could not difrentiate itself from XBox. Basically its a mindset. Just like all those developers who swore up and down that NS was dead at 6.1 but then 6.2 came out and now 7.0 and AOL has intergrated NS into Compuserve and is gearing up to test run AOL+NS on the MAC platform.

now that i think about it, isn't it Dell or Gateway who has the largest number of machines in K-12 now?

in any case, i hate the "Windows has market dominace therefore you should use it" argument. lotta fools out there riding in Ford Escorts, don't mean i should go out and get one.

you can lower the sucker all you want, put some nice rims and low profile tires on it, but at the end of the day you still have a Ford Escort.

it's been said before, but the machine that you use is just a tool. personally, i think the "what chair do you sit on" thread has more relevance.

yes but your driving either a gas burning or diesel burning car.

a biodiesel or alchohol car would be more efficient and better for the environment.

    yup. that's a good point.

i sure can't use MSOffice, or Internet Explorer, or Windows Media Player, or Outlook on my Mac.

oh, wait, maybe that's not a good example…

your stupid. you can use MSOffice for OS X. In fact microsofts own team that developed the mac version of office claim that it is better then the Win version. it is, I have used both. Thats pretty sad. Also, i have windows media player on my mac and it works great although quicktime is still much better. O.k. thats it

and, if you are going to call somebody "stupid" make sure you get it right:

"you're stupid". as in "you're", a contraction for "you are", not "your", an adjective indicating posession.

being polite to strangers is always a good habit, too.

Stupid and ignorant are two different things. I have never heard of OS X cuz I am a PC guy. That does not make me or anyone else stupid. The fact that MS made something(s) to work on a MAC only strengthens their position. It adds even more money to their PC-based company.

    personally, i aspire to neither.

but it really doesn't strengthen yours, does it:

my point was that i don't need a Windows machine to take advantage of Microsoft's products. yes, Microsoft is a huge company, yes Microsoft makes lots of money, yes Microsoft has a huge market dominance, but i still prefer to kick along on my little Powerbook. it makes me happy.

can we agree to disagree, and move on?

Microsoft invests and gives money to apple. I think to the point of actually keeping them afloat for a while (before the cool stuff of course).

    Not this argument again!!!

For what it would cost you to get a top of the range mac, you could get an absolute BEAST!! of a PC - I know what i'd choose.

    Thats a very good point.

Last Christmas a bought a PC for £400, and it flies along quite happily. I had to clip some bits together, and even use a few screws, but it we fun all the way. And, I'm in the safe knowledge that I can take the cpu this christmas, and cash it in for a higher one without too much cost. Also, I can easily get parts for it close to home. That makes my life easy, which is sorta the aim of it.

its hardly worth arguing pc vs mac as their a different kettle of fish.

MAC is primarily a workstation while your average PC is a an alt source of entertainment and a glorified typewriter.

far better to discuss PC workstations vs MAC then you get a fair comparison

I am unsure what the difference is between a pc and a pc workstation. Could someone explain. I apologize for the ignorance.

How the *!£$ is being a vegetarian better for the environment than not driving a car!!!!??

This is why the world is such a mess - people have strange priorities.

i didn't say it was better for the environment than not driving a car, i just said (in jest-that means as a joke) that by being vegetarian it offset the global guilt of owning a gas powered car.

in all seriousness though, it takes significantly more natural resources to produce an equivalent amount of beef, pork, or chicken than it does rice, beans or tofu, especially in a modern industrialized society. that's all i meant by it.

now, before i get too many replies bashing me and/or my lifestyle, i am vegetarian for health reasons and health reasons alone. it's a personal decision and i don't try to push it or hold not being vegetarian against anyone.

maybe i should have said it offsets my guilt for really enjoying back-country snowboarding...

so the iMac is now a workstation? heheheh ok fair enough workstation against workstation, so I assume you mean a Dual 1GHZ PowerMac against what? What's going to be your baseline for the PC system?

hey I thought the joke was quite funny.

however concerning teh resources of rice vs chicken you'll have to prove that to me. you can cramp chickens in a tall little coupe. can't really do that with rice. but perhaps this is a debate for the lounge.

I'll never understand why people get so heated over this stuff. It's as though everyone is paid off by one side or the other. I just want the best solution, I don't care who offers it.

To me the biggest x factor has been the operating system. I've been a PC most of my life, and recently switched to a Mac as my workhorse. I've never had a PC as stable as my Mac, nor as RAM efficient.

My biggest beef with PCs over the years has been that RAM is often unavailable long after it should have been made available by the OS (eg. closing a program or large file). On the Mac, running OSX, the RAM works like it should. No reboots, no crashes, etc.

All-in-all I've been more productive on the Mac due to increased stability, and an overall better OS.

I still use my PC for accounting, and email (mostly because it's more screen space).

Note: Another nice aspect of OSX is that since it's UNIX-based, you can run Apache/PHP/MySQL (preinstalled), and test apps locally. This saves me TONS of time during incremental testing. You can do this on PC of course, but if you're uploading to a UNIX server eventually you'll have to make adjustments to your scripts later.
