When the first American people came from England, they wanted to be different. They created a sport (american football) and called it football to mock the english. They then called it Soccer, soccer only to see it as a joke because they wear long socks, ie. "Socker." They also created a simple version of cricket and called it baseball.
Ha ha - yeah - you can't see proper cricket ever catching on over there. Playing for 5 days, and still with the possibility that the whole thing could end up in a draw (sorry, "tie") - can't see the tv networks or fans liking that too much !

I read somewhere that 'soccer' is actually an English word. After the invention of rugby, there were 2 codes of 'football' - rugby football and association football. Soccer was the abbreviation for 'association'

    Angry

Soccer isn't that big in the US. I've never even watched a soccer game on TV. The only televised sport I watch is American football.

What Hollywood says is true...but as an American who never really liked soccer before, its hard not to get pumped for an event like the World Cup. When the fans get so into it, and the level of play is so high, it's great to watch.

The call on Totti was correct! Although the defender may have made contact with Totti's left leg, his right leg was untouched so it must have been hit by a sniper in the crowd because he fell down like a sack of $hit.

If Totti had tried to stay on his feet he could have managed it easily.

Typical Italian cheat deserved everything he got!

Sorry for being a 'Statto' (UK fans will know)

So where does the word "soccer" come from?

In the 1880s students of Oxford university abbreviated words by adding "er" to the end; for instance, breakfast became "brekkers" and "rugby rules" was referred to as "rugger." When one student, Charles Wreford Brown, was asked if he'd like to play rugger, he was the first to abbreviate "association rules" (Football Association rules) by answering, "No, soccer." Brown later bacame an England international and Football Association vice-president.

    Excuse me......

Now if you clearly seen the replay, the korean player made contact with his leg and not the ball!! It does not matter whether he touched the other leg. Plain and simple he tripped him.Whether it was by mistake, or intentionally. Fans say it, and commentators have stated it. If your gonna make a call like that, the referee should have awarded the free kick to Korea and not the yellow/red card to Totti. What is this, typical Italian cheat comment...Im sorry, but I do take that to offence. Italy is not one of the best teams in the world by being cheaters. You might as well say it for all the super powered teams. I dont know what you were watching, but the game is played on the big green pitch, with lines running around the field which they call boundries, an 18 yard box, a center circle, etc...... It is not a big blue surface that covers the world and changes color when the sun goes down.

It was clear for anyone who owns a TV that Totti exaggerated the tackle. Although the defender did make contact with the ball and Totti's left leg, Totti fell over like he'd been sniped from the crowd. The law against "simulation" is clear in black and white. He tried to gain a penalty from a good clean tackle. Totti should be fined like Rivaldo to stamp out this annoying behaviour.

Although i agree with you that Italy are one of the best teams in the world, they do themselves no favours by diving at every given opportunity. Maybe they should watch Owen and Heskey who are regulary fouled in the box but try to stay on their feet to score a goal. The referee's job is hard enough without "simulation" from some of the best players in the world.

All in all Totti was tackled and contact was made but Totti clearly made a meal of it and that is known as "simulation" which is a bookable offence. He deserved to go.

I'll have to agree to disagrre with you.

Ps. the line that runs around the pitch are not known as boundaries (you must have been watching the cricket on Channel 4) they are known as the touchline.

i dunno about your commentators... but the ones i heard on TV agreed that the korean's leg touched the ball 1st before totti... im not taking anyone's side and i'd prefer it if noone got sent off, im just telling u wat i heard on TV so don't get agro on me

What's funny is that teenagers in England and Japan are copying Beckham's mohawk hairstyle. I read it in the paper.
Could be why Japan lost. Maybe it's an omen.

This is the first time i see this foram---no complaints---and my bet is the last game will be Germany x Brazil. Brazil 2x1...with a chance of going into overtime.

I do not want a game going into penalties, I will have a heart attack just watching!

Question: How in the hell does italy get beat by korea? How?
