    i'm a newb to 3ds max r4, so i've a question.
i'm acquainted with almost everything the prog offers. i know how to UVW map, etc, etc. but how in the world do you get a material to reflect what's around it, NOT the environment map?

    please help!

You can use the reflect/refract map from the material editor
or likewise apply a raytrace material from there. Play with the settings to get the effect you are after.

yea, like the guy above this said. open the material editor & scroll to the 'maps' part & click 'reflection/refraction' & use a raytrace map.

oh, and be careful when you say that you've acquainted yourself with everything R4, just when you think you've done everything, there's soemthing else which comes outta nowhere, believe me!

Are simply new to R4 or 3ds max in general, if yoou have 3 then the specular higlights and glossines have been renamed, that may be your problem, if you are new to max in general then i doubt you are familiar with almost all the program has to offer, especially as you can't generate reflection. Lets face it there are people who have worked on the program for years and still only know small areas of its massive capabilities, next you will be telling us you know everything about the internet!!
