    farewell to you ,
    i must go,
    ive found a better home,
    a place to roam

    i must leave this site,
    now for good,
    i could tell you why,
    not sure if i should,

    your site is laggy,
    slower than crap,
    your blue and yellow suck,
    im not gonna look back,

but oh the time we had some fun,
    when jezza lost his mind,
    and had a cute bun,

    but times have changed,
    oh yes they have,
and its time i move on,
    ....................

Funny thing is, that means capty has waisted his life posting over 4400 times combined at FK and dream.in.code

You're a sad sad little man my friend
But you made the right choice

...well hey, can't argue with that bit.
This is one of the slowest sites I've seen
and it's PHP, which is known for it's speed.
Must be bad code or in need of some DB optimization.
    Both more than likely.

But, hey... never one to sniffle over watching a little speck of drama blow away.

    toodles, ciao, hasta la vista
and don't let that door hit you on the way out.

I'll bet that took longer than the typical disgruntled member's

"*fret* *fume* I'm going to Were-Here!!!"

But pretty much the same effect.

bye capty, not that you've been around these parts for a long time mang!

I think the site is a lot faster these days and if it's slightly slower than most, don't forget the scale of flashkit as a resource site. There aren't many around like it!

I agree jamble, people seem to think that FK is just the boards! This site has a ton of things for people to look at and learn from. Anyway, cya later capty, even though this is the first time I have ever seen your name around these parts!

Well I haven't been around for much time regardless though,
I know when a PHP site is slow considering I'm a pretty advanced PHP class designer.

Not that I'm about to run off crying about it, but it's a fact. If the site is faster now than at some time before, then there is definitely a coding issue.

As far as vox's post and how extensive this site is, databases can be trimmed and optimized quite nicely. This is a high trafic site and I think part of the problem is MySQL, which can start to fold with 100+ simultanous queries.
MySQL is a great lowend database for sites with small traffic loads. They'd be better off with postGres, while not quite as speedy as an optimized MySQL database, is much more robust and can handle thousands of simultanous queries without a major performance hit.

There is much to PHP and database connectivity.
    There is never one culprit.

How well is the code base designed and implemented?
How efficient is the table structure and indexing for the database?

A higher end database with stored procedures and triggers could speed things up a bit.

The use of template parsing, session management and reusable objects would really benefit a site such as this that demands a 3-tier architecture.

But from the silly PHP errors I've seen on the site from time to time lets me know that the coding is average, and definetely not upto the load this site gets.

Not pointing fingers or saying it's crap, but as a person who knows PHP inside out and backwards I call it as I see it.

If Flashkit ever wants a site upgrade, I have a 3-tier architecture ready to go that would get this thing atleast 30% faster and much easier to upgrade and maintain. But we'd be talking atleast $25,000.00 for a site this scale. Not for the architecture, since I provide that for free to all large projects, but for the revision of their services in whole.

It's many things combined. I'm sure you're also taking into account there are mill and a half messages in the DB, and the earlier versions of vB hit the DB like crazy.

Also, footers are linked from several sites in each thread, so you have to watch the status bar to make sure it's FK that's lagging.

And most importantly, look at the very bottom left of each page and you'll see the time it took for the server to send you the page.

It's v1 -- vB has improved significantly, yes and yes.

    It's in there.

But from the silly PHP errors I've seen on the site from time to time lets me know that the coding is average, and definetely not upto the load this site gets.

Every error that I've known about since Feb has been due to table corruption.

We're moving towards implementing a balanced model, but we need to convert the main site to PHP first. Once that's done, I think your going to see much more than a 30% increase.
