Looks like not many people want to answer this post. I just recently graduated myself only to find myself in closed marketplace. Design firms, at least here in Texas, are not hiring. I know it is not just me or my work because all of my recently graduated friends have not landed a "job" either. We all have had interviews, but they all end with..."good work. If we were hiring we would hire you."

I usually look for jobs/interviews by checking out organization's sites such as the AIGA (www.aiga.org) or just do a search for graphic/web design firms on the internet then email them directly from their website.

I have found that sites like hotjobs, careerbuilder, monster, etc have not been too helpful either lately. You only get a handful of jobs anymore in a search and most of them are through staffing firms.

Direct contact is the best way. Find companies that you would like to work for, then call, mail, or email them. They won't know to hire you if they don't know that you are interested to work for them.

yup good advice above, direct contact is always best.

agencies, although friendly and persistant in the most part do not usually have any specialised knowledge in various fields of design and can end up bugging you for wrong jobs or totally bypassing ones that would have been ideal (having said that, if your cv/resume and portfolio are any good they'll hit the mark eventually)

one question though - why 'realisticly' looking for work abroad rather then england? is that coz you wanna get out of the country or you think there is more work abroad? I'm in london and there is a huge amount of web design work esp. freelance around - I was made redundant a month back and i've been busier than I ever was at 'work' and it's a lot more fun (+ the rates are higher...)

bummer i've written all that and haven't actually helped you out at all. oh well, if you choose to stay in england, stick your CV on jobserve, move down to london and work freelance til someone phones you!

    hi!
I'm about to move back to London after a year in NZ
    Is the market really ok...?
I have been looking on http://www.jobserve.com and it seems a little better than 12 months ago, but the rates are really low...
I used to use jobserve as an indicator of what was around, and then use agencies like best and gabby skelton to get work
    hmmm...

    hello!

rates-wise freelancing it depends what you do - I'm not a 'web-designer' as such and my friends who are say that daily rates are quite low at the moment (still higher than a permanent position though if you are busy), I specialise in interactive + games stuff and if you eek out the right people and develop a good relationship you can make good money. Hope you get sorted out when you come back to London!
