    I've used a tutorial to create a movie which is selfcontained and built entirely actionscript wihout frames (onclipEvent..etc). An object moves across the stage back and forth in a continual loop. I've created a button instance and have tried to target/stop the movie, but have been unsuccessful in my efforts.

    What would be the best way for me to control this movie with buttons ( stop,play etc)?

    Thanks!

    Put this code on the button for stop. I will refer to your movieclip as 'ball'. Replace 'ball' with the instance name of your movieclip.

    Code:
    on (release) {
          _root.ball.stop()
    }
    Now, for the play button, just replace "stop" with "play"
