my fonts are anti-aliasing -- and before you even think it, yes, they're set to exact whole pixels on the stage.
the worst part is, only some of the uses are doing this. others are displaying clean.
i've got the auto-kerning on, and i've double-checked that they're all at 100 percent (since flash seems to randomly alter the transformation setting by a fraction of a percent every once and a while.)
any ideas why this is happening?

if you're text is nested in a MC, the mc must be on whole pixels as well. I think... try it.

yup, already done. any other ideas?

Aversion is right, the MC containing the Text does also need to be on a whole pixel.
Since you have tried that already..
Is the text left-justified?
Have you tried another Pixel Font (that is meant for Flash)? Try grabbing a font from one of the below sites and try it out. Of course if the new font works, your font is having some problems. If not then it is certainly a flash problem.. Just something else to try to narrow down the problem.
Beyond this, if you wish to either share with us the font you are trying to use, and/or provide us with a sample .fla file I'll be happy take a look at it for you.

it was the font. (although the first few versions used the same font without a problem, oddly enough.)
thanks

For all you guys using pixel fonts inside movie clips that contain images and/or other elements: these elements need to be placed on the pixel as well as otherwise they will cause the font to shift and make it blurry.
We have lately reviewed this on our user guide. You can download our free user guide on the freebies section of http://www.fontsforflash.com
