ive been using bryce 5 extensively along with 3d studio max... bryce 5 is a fantastic program for creating simple and 'somewhat' complex 3d animations/volumetric terrains/character animation (with poser) and the list goes on.
(i say 'somewhat' since you cant edit verteces or meshes, but i use 3dsmax for that. so importing in several formats like, .3ds is possibple. also .psd, .jpg and such if you want to compose photoshop work in a 3d generated animation or still.)
its great for 3d bits and peices for flash too since you can export to bmp sequences instead of video and then directly import to flash, creating an sequencial bmp MC.
with MX thought, video is more the way to go. though a little more heavy...
did you have any questions i could help you with about integrating bryce work with flash?

Superman

Can i export a Bryce object/animation as a swf?

nope. render out as a movie, and import into FlashMX.

also check out world builder wich can do about what bryce can (somethings more some less) and it exports to max or maya wich can have an swf export. I dont know how well this works though because i couldnt install. I got my money back so its okay.
